Dash Mono Speaker to Stereo Conversion

Since I have the cluster out of my Laurentian, I felt now was a good time to remove that center dash speaker and convert to stereo speakers. Here is the original 40 year old speaker:

Utilizing the original bracket for that speaker, I mounted to Audiovox units I picked up at Princess Auto for a whopping $3.77 each:

I joined them together using a couple of screws and a dual-holed clip I had in my "junk drawer". The speakers stay nicely in place on the bracket thanks to their magnets. Once mounted under the dash, the bracket bolts tightened in such a way to "press" the speakers to the dash, thus ensuring a nice tight, rattle free fit:

Here's how they look from above:

Sure, I could have purchased the pre-made dual speaker conversion from Classic Autosound for over $50, but what fun would that be? My investment? About 7 bucks.
I still need to purchase a rear speaker cover to match my factory "auxilary" speaker cover as well as a pair of rear speakers. I haven't decided where to hide my deck (the 8 track will stay in the dash). It will either go in the glove box (my deck has a remote) or I'll purchase one of those accessory tissue dispensers and put it in there under the dash (even though I don't think GM offered them in 1969).

Looks great, thats what i was thinking on doing for mine. My car was radio delete so i am going to try and put the deck in the glove box and the only thing i have to figure out is where to put the rest of the speakers and if i need a new alltinater to power it all(amp, speaker box)

Did pretty much the same trick on my 60 wagon, mounted the amp in the storage area in the back and am going to mount the stereo in one of them kleenex boxes.

i have the original altenator in my car, do you think i would have to change it to put an amp in? I was also thinking(more like dreaming) if it would be possible to hook up one of my guitar amps up in the car so i could play guitar out of it!! I think i saw one of billy gibbons from zz tops cars have one.

Do you mean you still have a original generator? You may have to swap it out with a modern alternator if you are running high powered amps etc.

I would probably still install some sort of a screen between the grille openings and the speakers themselves.  They were factory installed for a reason, to keep all kinds of dust and crap from falling down onto the speakers and gumming up their operation.

That puppy is a generator. Nothing wrong with them but it may cook if you run a lot of "toys"..

I ran my original generator for a while, When I hooked up the stereo and amp, it only took 1 day of driving around to completely drain the battery so it didn't have enough power for the coil....Wondered why my car stalled and wouldn't start....luckly I had an extra battery in the back and got it going(without the stereo on)
Changed over to an alternater and new battery and it works great now

Heres a couple easy diagrams to look at when changing.  One is old style with the external regulator.

thanks sixtywagon, I have the external regulator so that helps. It will be the winter project to switch it over and re-do the wiring in the engine bay and rear lights. For now i just want it on the road for Todd,s shindig!!

I got some cashola for my birthday so I treated myself to a set of Pioneer 6x9's for the rear. I also found another speaker cover from a fellow member and am waiting for it to arrive. I felt better later this afternoon so I wired up my "hidden" deck and the front speakers. They sound quite good. Once the other speaker cover comes I'll install the rear speakers. It'll be nice to play my favorite songs for the remainder of the season.

Glad you are feeling better.. Dont tighten those speakers too tight!  Once you put in the big block, you won't need music..  You will be listening, to the "music "coming out the back!!!
