RE: And So It Begins- The Big Block Swap

After waiting over two weeks for my oil pick up tube to arrive I installed it tonight and... it was also too long !furious

In a brief act of brilliance, I pulled out my GM parts book and looked up the PN for the GM pick up tube in a 69 427 B-body. PN 3955281. A quick Google search revealed that this pick up tube is still available from GM Performance Parts! So.. off to the GM dealer tomorrow to order it.. I should have done this in the first place.disbelief

I ordered the tube from the dealer today. $26 bucks. It's coming out of the U.S and hopefully it will be in on Friday.

Yours is a "582". I hope this "581" is the right one. That was the PN in my book for a 427 69 Pontiac. If it is wrong then I suspect perhaps I have the wrong pan?

Here's a photo of the Carquest pick up tube next to the oil pan.

Here's a side view of the pan. Dave, does this look like the right pan?

you've got the correct oil pan.

the pickup tube you need has very little 'drop'

Heck Trevor, we'll have you over to help with the swap!

I took the pump and pick up tube to Tiny's on Wednesday night. He brazed it in place for me. Last night I installed it and the pan. A fresh coat of orange paint jazzed it up a bit. Today I picked up some glass beads. I'm going to replace the sand in my blast cabinet with this media. I have a set of original style valve covers I'm going to strip and repaint. Next it's the intake swap and some minor bits and pieces and we'll be just about ready to do the swap. I'll take all volunteers who can come out on a Sunday or Monday in the next 3 weeks or so to help with the swap. I'm sure I can convince Connie to feed us!

I'm not sure I'll be ready for the swap at that point. Busy week ahead. I'll keep you posted.

The oil pan is on and the aluminum intake should be bolted on in the next couple of days. Still looking for stock style chrome valve covers.

I agree about the chrome. Remember the old saying, "If it don't go, chrome it"?

I don't have any chrome. wink

I like the orange intake too, now take that $100-$150 you just saved on covers and spend it somewhere else !

Dave, I can't believe you'd put a Canadian Pontiac big block in a Chevrolet. That's almost a sin....
