Harness plugs, where to buy new replacement connectors?

Here's a page describing the different Ga, colour and ratings of the different standard fusible Links.

When you talk about the brown lead coming off the battery positive to the terminal post, I bet more than a few never knew that was a protection wire. I remember long ago replacing that wire with just what I had on hand at the time.
From what I've read so far, a FL (fusible link) is absolutely the best way to protect your harness. Some are using MaxiFuses, but apparently they will fail after a given number of spikes, which the fuse link will survive.
As a general rule, use a FL 4 Ga. sizes smaller than the main wire, Eg; a 10 GA. wire will use a 14 Ga. FL.
I now know that factory FL splices were made using both a crimp connector and a solder dip.

Now, from what I can see on the big 69' Underhood harness, FL's appear at;

  • Battery to pos. Rad support junction block. 14 Brown.
  • At Horn relay power bus to 12 Red - bulkhead plug, main cab power in. 16 Black
  • At voltage reg position #3 off of 10 Red Battery lead from horn relay power bus. 20 Orange.

Tried the Dealer for some connectors.
No luck on the Male, but he had some Female...for $4 each! Forget it.

He did give me some supeceded GM part #s for them.
Male 2971962. Was 2965429.
FM   6288917. Was 2977615.

Napa had none.

Tried Carquest. Low and behold they had the 56 series in blister packs hanging on a rotating display. $4 for a pack of 5. They even have P.E.D stamped on them. Never take the lowly rotating display for granted.

Bought out their stock.

I also noticed that they have a decent amount of connector bodies and the like as well. Some also have the PED stamped on them. I'll be going back!

I wonder how many restored cars actually have the "brown #14 gauge wire" in place.
I bet it is not many.

Of course, now i have to install it on my 67's, just to be correct.

Dave

A little update here. My space requirements changed here and I was forced to move my Acadian from the shed into the garage. First thing I thought of when I removed the hood was that wire!

I will not guarantee this is original but I bought the car off the original owner in 1986.  I since changed the positive cable and that is why you see heat shrink on the end of the fusible link because I reused it when I put the new cable on. The piece between the heat shrink and the little "barrel" is the fusible link. The "fusible link" writing is still faintly visible on it.

So I'm assuming that the "barrel" is just the crimped joint cover?

I have no Idea what's in there! It is tough to tell. I am guessing they did that just to make the fusible link obvious when you see that thing, but just a guess.

Dave will have an educated answer for us! He's the research King!!! winner.gif

This is getting more confusing by the minute.
(not only that, if you think this is confusing, you should check out my 67 throttle return delema!)

So, you are saying the fuseable link is on the left of the barrel in your above photo?

I gotta find one of these things and cut it apart!
Maybe tomorrow i will dig out my wire harnesses and see what i can find.

No, it's to the right. If you look carefully you can see the heat shrink about 4" to the right. Between the shrink and the barrel is the fusible link.

I am going to go look on the build sheet microfiche for 67 and see if I can find your spring. We were away for a bit but I've been following the story there.

Here are the 3 standard ones used on all GM cars of the 50s and 60s.
The 2 brass ones are the male and female connectors. They are availabel from just about any aftermarket resto catalogs.  The best price is .25 cents each from "classic parts of america."  They work great.

I build all my own harnesses and these are for sure the way to go!

The other one in the photo is the "GM twin-loc."  It was used on all bulkhead(fuse panel) connections on any 58-67 GM, chevelle, beaumont, etc.
It is WAY harder to find.  GM part number is 2973915.
I have only found them from GM and the price is a huge 2.50 per connector and you have to buy 25 at a time.

Has anyone found a source for these twin-locks?

I found a supplier in the states that sells these conectors.
http://ca.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=2973915
A little more reasonable than GM. I had also had the pleasure of buying them from GM as they were the only ones that I could find to buy them from.

No I haven't, I had done as u did and bought them from my local GM store that I used to work at. I had run across this disscusion in the Performance years tech site quite a while ago, but had just run across this discussion today. So here it is. Like u I tore my whole dash harness out and laid it out on a 4x8 sheet of plywood, replaced need wires and terminals.  Also my buddy's 65 cuda used the same terminals for the turn signal switch.
