I'm thinking the stamped steel ones are usually mounted on the front of the alternator ear, while it seems the two piece flatbar style usually sits on the rear of the ear. The stamped one seems to have more offset.

I was just coming in to add what you wrote. I agree with you.

I know those flat bar type brackets had a habit of breaking, thus the changeover to dual brackets (twinning them). I wonder if the stamped steel style is a recall or something?

Mine bolts in from the front original 327 motor. I checked it today, it does look like it would have been a better idea to have them bolted from the back as this would have given the belts a little more clearance room .

Much ado about nothing perhaps.
Just did the swap, and I think that it aligns a little better. However, it likely doesn't make a large difference as to which side it is mounted as the bracket does have a little "give" so that when mounted on the front, the lower alternator bolt pulls the bracket back to likely negate any of the gain. I do however feel better knowing that it is now as described in the GM fiche!
