November 2009 Feature Car

For quite some time I have wanted to feature a Canadian built Pontiac Sedan Delivery. Since so few were made, I felt it would be quite a while before I'd find a nice one to show off on Canadian Poncho. Well along comes Doug McCurdy and his beautiful '57! Having seen it in person I can attest that this is one beautiful Sedan Delivery! We'll let Doug fill us in on the details:

I have been restoring a modified 1955 Pontiac Sedan Delivery for the past 5 years and it is still a ways from being finished. I have been anxious to have a car on the road so I came across an ad for a 1957 Pontiac Sedan Delivery. So just for the fun of it I called the owner and the more I talked to him the more interested I became in this vehicle. The car sounded like it was in nice condition and I have always liked the 1957 Pontiac since I was a kid. So my wife and I flew down to Florida to look at the car and if it didnt work out we would get a little break from the cool weather. I had a 55 PontiacSedan Delivery when I was going to school, I was always to make money back then delivering catalogues telephone books etc. so this gave me an interest in Sedan Deliveries. When I arrived in Florida we went straight to look at the car and I was just blown over with the nice condition the car was in, so I thought about it for about seconds and told him I would take it. He told me I could drive it home to Ontario no problem but I decided to have it trucked back. Everything works on the car passed the safety first time. The car is very unique and I had never seen one at any car show that I have attended. I have had a lot of fun taking it to car shows and it is great for conversations people say they have never seen a car like that or did you take the side glass out.

This car was made in Oshawa, Ontario March 08/1957 and shipped March 13th/1957 to Enerson Motors, Lethbridge, Alberta. This vehicle was 521 of a 857, colour Imperial Ivory, trim was charcoal and grey, the engine was a 261 CID 148 HP 1bbl 6 cylinder, options a second sun visor and a radio.

It turns out the car was purchased in southern Alberta Brooks (my wifes home town) in the early 90s and then went to Edmonton for 7 or 8 years and then went to Florida till this spring and then back to Canada.

I have taken the liberty to put the wide whites and wheel discs on. They both were options and could have been ordered from the factory that way.

I have been told there are less that 10 left on the road.

It will be fun showing both Sedan Deliveries one completely stock and the other completely modified and you probably will not find a similar one at the show.

Doug

I posted some from Doug Here.  At the end of the post. I had no idea Todd was going to post Doug's 57, he must have been shocked when I did my post about two days a go with both of Doug's Cars.

Wow, is that a nice car!

I also happen to love 57's. Something about that year.

Kinda neat to see it come back to Canada too. And to all you CP members outside of Canada, that is not meant as a bad thing. We are just so used to seeing our stuff leave, seldom does it return.

Sedan

This 1957 Pontiacmag-glass_10x10.gif Sedan Delivery is one of only 570 manufactured, and one of only four known to still exist. This vehicle was sold new in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and was first used as a delivery vehicle for a grocery store. Based on the Pontiac Chieftain body style, this car has a 122-inch wheelbase. It is equipped with a three-speed manual transmission, with overdrive, and a 287-cubic inch V8 engine. The current owner bought it in 1997, and drove it from Edmonton, Alberta, to his home in Largo, Florida. The car achieves over 22 miles per gallon on the highway.

Did you notice this V8 car had a similar story?  Alberta to Florida     interesting..   maybe a typo on the motor?

Has to be a typo. 287 was the original Pontiac V8 used in 55, by 57 it was 347. I suspect it should read 283 the Canadian Pontiac engine size..

That would be an easy slip up for an American Pontiac fan to make.

Carl, I think you are right. Really there is no way that two of these exist with the identical story. The description about the V8 is just wrong I suspect. No question there is a pristine 261 under that hood.
