Don't Blow a GASKET but

I removed my left side header, today..  I looked like, it would not have room, to get gasket cleaned up, as header is tight to steering box.. After I loosed collector and header, it (header) actually moved down and away!

I have read on other forums, that "copper" and "aluminum" and reg "Fel Pro" are the favorites of some..  I checked with Car Quest, they have Mr Gasket in stock...

Ok, I saw you were showing shots there.

Doesn't it look like the head bolt under number one has a layer of soot too?

Sorry, I'm must not a header guy for exactly the reason you are showing us now.

you have a good eye!    the #1 is broke at bottom, when I pulled it out    I was think of getting rid of headers, but will see how new gasket works..  My Chief has headers from 1991 and are nice and tight and no leaks..   these headers are Hedman long tube, and they came with car...  I thought manifolds would be ok, but no sense spending money yet....  I do think we are putting a lot of perforance stuff on cars, that we can't use anymore ( I mean out on open roads)  and the drags are a 8 hour sit in the sun for 2 passes, affairs..

The worst set of heasers for burning gaskets I had were on my Monza, now that was a real job but I just finessed it every time. Usually had to loosen the engine and jack it up a bit. They were three pieces on the left flange. I see your's are two pieces. I think that leads them to loosening because they are not all tied together and they flex there. In fact I got to the point where I only changed part of the gasket where it was burned and loose. Once I fgured that out they never got loose again.

You don't have to spend a lot to get cast iron manifolds, you can pick them up at every swap meet, clean them up and get them powder coated or paint them.

I prefer cast iron factory mainfolds because I don't speed or race plus they are quiet too. At my age I don't like too much noise.

Use stock manifold gaskets and cut the bolt holes so they are sloted and slide in they last twice as long as header gaskets and you can change the one at a time in the future trust me it works great being doing it for year and never had a problem!

Not sure why they do it that way but I think that is not uncommon. Seems strange, why not make it the right way?

Same here Carl. I had a 65 convert. 327, side pipes, noisy , but i was young so i didn't mind. Then a few years later, 69 coupe 350 Hooker headers/sidepipes with no baffles. that was too much. I don't know how you do it Bob. i would be deaf now if i kept driving them!

The factory exhaust port on 'fuelie" heads is not round.

RE: Don't Blow a GASKET

Thank you!   The heads "are" 64 fuelie double hump, original to the motor...I got a brighter light and stronger glasses, and the ports are square.

The gasket was round port to match the Header... Looks like the gasket I got today, will work better matching to the head, instead of header...   thanks for confirming that..   I will add something nice, to the lump of coal, I was sending for CHRISTMAS   Carl too

Exactly what Tiny said. I've found these to be the best solution as well.

i might have some headers for sale soon. now that the car is lowered i might not be able to keep them on. headman headers for an X frame car, used for three months. its a shame, cause i always wanted headers on a car and never did it till now, oh well.

Sounds better...    have you ever asked a parts guy for them?  They come in a rebuild kit and are almost never used..   I installed my new square port gasket to day and got the car sounding 1000 times

louder!!! blehbleh    want to buy some headers?

Carl,

You don't by chance have a bent header flange do you??? I had an old pk up where it was bowed in the middle. I doubled up the gasket in the center, and never had a problem after that. confuse  Just a thought.......
