vinyl tops

Someone told me recently that whenever you ordered a car with the vinyl top, the roof would not be factory painted. This prompted some buyers to order the car w/o the vinyl and have the dealer install it. Is this a myth?

this is true my 72 monte has a vynyl top and has rust issues along the back because they did not paint the roof.Pretty stupid eh?At some point i will need to peel back the roof and patch, or remove and epoxy prime.I really like the vinyl look on the monte and looks good on your car, black with red, same combo

Seam finish on vinyl roof cars was not up to non vinyl roof standards either.

My 68 had a vinly roof and when I ripped it off because off bubbling from rust , it was not painted either so I had to replace the rear panel between the glass & trunk as it was rusted. I would never put one on again for this issue.. my two cents

My 69 Grand Prix has a painted roof beneath the original factory installed vinyl. I removed the vinyl top because of bubbling. The bubble was at the factory leaded seam where the finishing bondo had cracked. The original bondo did not adhere properly to the lead. There was no rust issues below the vinyl. Too bad the rest of the car has rot and I am going to part it out this summer.
