I have a leaky heater core. There is a slight leak inside the car (carpet's wet). Can I disconnect the hoses, block them off (or should I join them, so the system still circulates?), and still drive it until I get the core leak fixed?

How did you make out with removing the heater core? They're a bit of a pain. You've got to remove the inner fender. You might want to replace the heater fan at the same time. That's an area you only want to rip apart once.

I just joined the 2 hoses together (5/8" to 3/4" inside diameter hose connector) for now. It bypasses the heater core so when I start up the engine I'm not adding to the wet carpet problem.
In my service manual it doesn't say anything about removing an inner fender, just the heater housing, power wires, and control cables. You remove the core from inside the car. On Chevy Talk, it's a 50/50 concensus about doing it with the inner fender dropped, or being able to reach the 2 hard to get nuts using a 3/8" boxend with the fender on. Have you done one?

I did the heater core on my 66 Beaumont . Got the heater core at Lordco. Didn't have to drop the inner fender, but it took me 2 days to get the one nut behind there off. I actually in the end just used a long screw driver and stuck it in there and tapped on the nut using a hammer . It finally came loose enough to spin off. After installing the new core, I never put that nut back on, (don't want to deal with it ever again).
I've never had to change a heater core on a '64. It's interesting to know that it gets removed from the inside. Some of the "old" mechanics around here who've done it back in the day,... told me they removed the inner fender to get at it. However,. imaybe it also works the way you've mentioned. ?? I'm not sure.
Has anyone out there done a heater core on a '64 full size Pontiac?
