t5 tranny from a 85 z-28


i have a chance to buy a 5 speed tranny out of a 85 z-28..to put in my 69 beaumont.with a 396 and 4;10 gears.is it the way to go..any thoughts or concerns will be appreciated..

sounds like, a big block with 4:10's will tear it apart....

Your standard T-5's are JUNK!!!!! Trust me i have one and it can't even handle my 305. GM used the exact same transmission in the Camaros and S-10's regardless of what motor was in front of them. You can get them upgraded to handle the kind of power you are putting out, but unless you know how to do the upgrade yourself it's pretty cashy. Your best bet for a stock transmission would be to grab a T-56 these can handle some pretty good power straight out of the factory. Here is an article on how to put a late model T-56 in our cars. Agreed, it would take NO abuse from a 396. A little small block can tear one to pieces with sticky tires.

The world class t-5 tranny's are better, but a 396 would still eat it alive.
