RE: Air Cleaner assembly feedback requested...

You are right about the 1966 327 picture. It is showing rams horn exhaust manifolds for the full-sized cars. Other than those and the Pontiac vs. Beaumont decals, the engines for the Pontiac vs. Beaumont would be dressed the same.

Without a doubt the 1967 Chevelles & Beaumonts used the same air cleaners as the U.S. Chevelles, but they would not be correct for a 1966 Canadian model.

Just going through my Parts Catalogue in an effort to confirm the correct air cleaner assembly for the '66 Beau 327, and came across the following:

3.406 Base, Air Cleaner and Silencer:
1 5729000 1966 / All with 327 and / 360 hp / 396 Engines - With Can. Filters
1 6422188 1966/ All W/396 Engine - W/AC Air Cleaner
1 6422188 1967-69/ All W/396 /350 hp / Engine - W/AC Air Cleaner

Also:

3.410 Cover, Air Cleaner and Silencer:
1 5728999 1966 / All with 327 and / 360 hp / 396 Engines - With Can. Filters
1 6422184 1966 / All with 327 and 396 Engines - With AC Air Cleaner
1 5728999 1967 / All with 275 hp /327 T/W Can. Filters Air Cleaner
1 6422184 1967 / All with 275 hp / 327 T/W AC Air Cleaner / Painted Black
1 6421832 1967 / All with 275 hp / 327 engine T/W AC Air Cleaner Chrome
1 6421832 1967 - 69 All With 350 hp / 396 engine T/W AC Air Cleaner Chrome

Although I'm not sure what is different/special with "Canadian Filters", it does seem like the two engines (327 and 396) did indeed share the same air cleaner assembly "base" and "cover" (or am I missing something)?

Any thoughts/guidance would be appreciated.
thx

I'm not sure if this helps or you already know this Geoff but the 6422188 I recognize as being the open element air cleaner.

as crazy as it sounds.. I'm taking the chrome L79 cleaner and having it powder coated black.
the chrome looks great... but it's just not for me. seems ridiculous, but. Try finding a black dual snorkle cleaner. I'll post pics when it's done.. should be this week.

Thanks for the heads up Carl.

So according to the parts manual, the only air cleaner base used in the '66 327 was the the same "closed" air cleaner assembly as used in the '66 396 (part # 5729000) which was for one year only (as the '67 327 used a #5729631)?  And the air cleaner cover used for non AC cars was the same used for the 360 hp / 396 with Can. Filters (part #5728999)?

3.406 Base, Air Cleaner and Silencer:
1 5729000 1966 / All with 327 and / 360 hp / 396 Engines - With Can. Filters
1 6422188 1966/ All W/396 Engine - W/AC Air Cleaner        (OPEN ELEMENT)
1 6422188 1967-69/ All W/396 /350 hp / Engine - W/AC Air Cleaner
(OPEN ELEMENT)
1  5729631  1967/All with 327 Engine
1  6422188  1967-69/ All w/396 /350hp/ Engine - W/AC Air  (OPEN ELEMENT)

As a result I have more questions...
-Does anyone have a picture of an original '66 396 (non A/C) Air Cleaner assembly?
-Or does anyone have picures of these part #'s (#5728999 and #5729000)?
-Does anyone have the Chevy parts books with the same info so I might be able to cross reference to see if the same similarities exist between the '66 Chevy 327 and 396 products?
-What's with the "Can Filters"?

Also maybe not news to some, but news to me, that the '67 327 looks like it had one base assembly available (which I assume was "closed")  but the option of a chrome lid.

Again, thanks in advance for any feedback.

I love the twin snorkel from the 701/2 Z28 biggrin

I had to run with no breather now, with the Supercharger and the 250HP NOS  set up won't let the hood close..

I'll see if I can get into the books later today. We are having company and I suspect before they arrive a nap may interfere with my reading....

One comment, if the 396 used the same base, then we know your correct Carter carb is the bigger one because the small Carter is not the same diameter as Q-jet/Holley.

That 66 SD is remarkably unmolested. I think the current bidding is a fair price. The 327s were downright rare on the Canadian A-bodies in 66. Its a shame since they were great motors in that chassis, and fuel economy was no worse than a 283 if you kept your foot out of the secondaries. The air cleaner looks like a 67 piece.

In 1966 decals did not go on air cleaners except for the big block. The small blocks & sixes used valve cover decals, and on the 283s & sixes they were positioned a little differently since they did not use the "Chevrolet" script on the valve covers as was the norm in the U.S.A. The 327s still used the valley style valve covers with the little rectangular spot for the decals, just the same as the U.S. models.

An old trick the rodders used back in the day was to drill holes in the base of the air cleaner (outside the element circumference of course) to allow more air to come in without giving it away. Not all the air had to come in via the single snorkel that way. Later us guys would flip over the lid on our air cleaners to give a full 360 degrees of access, plus it became an unsilenced air cleaner at that point. I loved to hear the secondaries open using such a trick, but the man wasnt impressed and I paid the price back in the day. You dont want to know.

Chevy made a black painted dual snorkel version of the old inverted "pot" style air cleaner, but the obscure application certainly would not make it any cheaper or available: the 305-horse 348. That motor was a solid lifter cammed single 4-barrel police Interceptor version in the late 50s through 1961. You could get it with a h.d. cast iron Powerglide as well as a 3 or 4-speed manual. I know, thanks for nuthin' yawn.gif

Reviving an old thread...

Just wrapping up on ebay is what looks to be an unmolested 66 Beaumont SD 327 (as spotted by CdnGMfan). Below are some photo's of the car which MIGHT be some of the best examples of an unmolested 327 engine bay? I say MIGHT as the trunk shows some spackle paint, indicating at least something has been done to this car. However, the front marker lights are clear, SC trim is intact, door panels looks to be original aside from the speakers, the valve covers look to be correct, etc.

As a result, I'm thinking this might be an original 327 AirCleaner assembly.  (Perhaps worth noting that there is no decal on the unit, although there are some remnants of VCD's there. I've asked the seller for a close up photo of these, but unlikely that I'll get them as the auction is near it's end.)
