I bought a complete, old base-model '64 Parisienne dash last Sunday out of a real beater (sorry, I had my camera, but I couldn't get at the tag under all the dirt, hemlock needles, ice & snow). I wanted the speedo lense which was good (mine has a bunch of web-like heat cracks in it). As I was taking off all the usable parts, I noticed 2 lights in the ashtray compartment, so I popped the clips and took them out. When I looked at them closely, there was no clear lenses, just solid metal lipstick container-like covers. I slide one off and inside was a bulb and socket. Why would they have these like this? Was it because it was a base model, and the Custom Sports would get "real see-through" lenses? I haven't had the chance to check my CS.
Just for interests sake, I also pulled the clock with a 22 cal. bullet hole right through it. The owner said that the Parisienne made a great target for his sons when they were growing up!

Darryl, there should be a 'tiny" pinhole in the shroud over the bulb, that just let enogh light into the ash tray that you could find it in the dark!!! Pete

No pinholes ... nothing to let light through ... a solid metal "lip-stick" tube whose base seals tight around the bulb socket. They clip in square holes inside/above the sliding ash tray. Weird.

Look again. There will for sure be a pin hole on the side of the jacket. On the side and close to the round tip.
It will be there, for sure.
yup, there should be 1 of 2 small holes to let a little light into the ashtray so it can be located in the dark. Depending on the model, etc some cars had an ashtray light, and some didn't. I've got spare harnesses for my cars that don't have the ashtray light, or the glove box light.

Nope. Nadda. I even cleaned them up and shone a bright light inside and outside with the lights off. Maybe they are factory rejects or maybe like I said earlier, on the base model they just put in dummy ones to block the 2 square holes above the ashtray ... but why include the sockets and bulbs with them?

Darryl, hook it up to a 12V pwr. source [bench test] & I "guarantee" you will "SEE THE LIGHT"
Ha, ha. I did see a small nativity scene inside.
Anyway, after all you guys insistance, I kept staring and staring at these things (I thought my eyesight was shot). So I thought why not pry off (mangle) the "clips" with a pair of vice grips. Guess what, the clips were welded overtop and totally covering the pinholes! Duh ... it must have been late Friday (beers) in the ashtray light assembly shop! I'm glad I'm not crazy!

Actually those were a rare option, code WTF, which were itty bitty heaters (you know how a light bulb heats up, right? well with those fully enclosed housings they radiated heat nicely, and none of the light escaped) to keep your cigarette warm, so it would not freeze to your lips, up there in the Frozen North, eh?

I have these in my '58 Bonneville (US Georgia). Official lipstick tube pinholes and all! Common sense says these lights come apart for bulb replacement and the pic seems to confirm that. Is there any trick to getting the tube open? Mine are in great shape vis-a-vis rust. I don't want to mess anything up. I'd love to find out I cant put new bulbs in instead of replacing the units.
