I agree with goushdds,a 650cfm Holley is a little too rich for a 283,this is a case where bigger isn't better...... a 500 cfm would work great.....read the sparkplugs & change jets as required..........much more efficient

I am pretty safe in saying a 600 vacuum secondary will work fine.

yup, a 600cfm is fine, at worst you can always jet down if its a little fat.

I PUT AN EDELBROCK 600CFM CARB ON MY '68 IMPALA 307. IT HAS A SLIGHTLY UPGRADED CAM AND HEADERS. IT SEEMS TO BE JUST ABOUT PERFECT FOR MY APPLICATION, I WOULD THINK IT WOULD WORK WELL FOR YOU TOO.

i dont know if you can do it for your budget but its worth a shot i did my 327 for 6 grand and i thought that was tight but that included all machine work and new pistons and rods. 300 hp  can be done but not that friendly, remember302s 295 factory 495 real world but not fun to drive. i would concentrate not so much on hp and more being able to drive it  , that means dont go nuts. good compresion 9.5 to 10 keep the heads but clean the bowls up they are a real bottleneck run 160 194 steel valves and have them backcut. 283s dont like big cams nothing over a 300hp horse stile cam 400cfm carb small rodchester 4gc will do it. this will be a very happy engine and owner

cant  say  , but  i remember lifting menholes  ( about 3 feet high )

it works great   with the excavator   instead  of  a loader on a tractor because  the joy sticks  are moore precise  thant  the  joy stick  on my  tractor

i will keep   you  posted on the progress

I might as well add my 10cents!! Back in the old days, i used to terrorize the streets of Wpg. with a 67 Custom, 283. Bored it .40thou over. ran 11:1 pistons, ported and polished heads, and a roughcam. Used to run great with a 600 DP Holly, matted to a 3 speed manual..loved to run to 60 MPH in first them slam to second...yea crazy combo! Your 283 at close to stock compression may not be able to handle the 600DP, and with the 2 speed, will bog. Sounds like you have figured out the right combinations ...hopefully will be running in time for the warm weather!!

my engine guy said he was going to bring the compression around 9.5 to 1 , i dont know the whole story but he is supposed to work the heads or combustion chamber for a better compression ( this is not clear to me ,my knowledge is ¸limited for know, engine wise !!)

the carb is going to put on is a 600 cfm vaccum secondary ( is that a double pump ???) i dont think so ............please instruct me boys ????

the car will not be driven this summer ( interior not done so far )
