well at school today i was looking at my connecting rods and guess what i have 4 that are bent beyond belief lol wow thats why i had a hard time with getting them out of my engine.... there has been one thing after another with my engine so if anyone knows where i can find a cheap (running) engine i don't care if it's a small block, big block but no 6 cyl's lol if anyone hears somthing about another 283 in the GTA that would be great.

i don't have a good block lol the wear is really bad i think i might have to bore it 0.30 just to remove the scratches and the ridge in that engine it would blow you away my valves need to be replaced i have 4 bent push rods a cracked intake and 4 bent connecting rods and when i tried to push the piston pins out in the press the piston shattered because it was soo old lol but it already had hair line cracks in it so what did i expect lol... and yes i would love to go big block might add a nice kick to the old girl .... how do i make a 468 lol...

i could fix it but i need to do alot of work like new connecting rods i could buy new but i can't afford that might look for a 283 thats junk and take those rods out could be good

Jonathan Did you use a ridge reamer before you tried to push out the pistons? You should NOT need a hydraulic ram to push the pistons out. Usually you can push them out (with a little persuasion) with the wooden handle of a hammer.
At the top of the cylinder above the area wiped by the rings each stroke, the cylinder bore is usually untouched and you can measure the original bore there and see the original cross-hatch. Just below that, at the top of the section that is wiped by the rings, is usually the worst wear. The step in between the wear-no-wear areas can catch the rings as you try to push the piston out. An old engine with lot of wear can easily have a shoulder 20 to 30 thousands high. You'll break rings, pistons, and possibly even bend the rods trying to force the piston out with a hydraulic jack. Instead, there's a tool (ridge reamer) that cuts this ridge down so the pistons and rings will slide out... Even when the pistons come out without ridge reaming, the machinist usually uses one to remove the ridge before he/she starts boring the hole.
I'm afraid I'm a day late and a dollar short to be of much help, but hopefully this wasn't the root of your problem.
I would love to help the young feller out, but I dont have any spare engines. I want to still be among the living when he posts pics of the first ride. By HS grad Maybe? I suppose the problem is not so much the mill, but getting to where it needs to be. I'd gladly donate $25 to the "get Johnathan on the road" fund going, provided that it gets matched by enough members to make it happen. it's very nice but i don't take money...... Again ive said this before im not close to giving up ive been to far and to long for any thought of that lol. Don't get me wrong i have thought about it but i don't give up ever... well when it comes to my car i will have her on the road by the end of summmer because i have all the metal cut and ready to weld into the body i have the frame done and painted so im close and will never give up lol i might be able to get a job at my local gm dealer because ive been doing a co-op placement there and they all really like me.so that would be best im just going to work with the money i have left maybe sell my xbox finally lol xbox and all games could go for 300-400 easy also i have alot of scrap metal ive colleted over the months....shhhhhhhhh my mom and dad don't know it's under the pool deck lol. there is a couple other things i could do like mow lawn and clean up peoples yards you know the winter mess.

i must have mis worded my self i cut the ridges with a ridge reamer taped he pistons out then i went to the metal shop and made a tool to get the pins out because the pistons are crap tooo lol hair line cracks in most of them so when i was pressing the pins out to remvoe the connecting rods the piston shattered parts got thrown everywhere trust me they where sharp the cut on my arm shows it lol. but ive taken all the right steps to get this engine going. ive just been thrown a curve ball and i can't play baseball lol. ill figure somthing out. i really do not like anything free it kinda bugs me.
Glad to hear it wasn't the ridge that bit you. I've seen guys pounding on rods trying to force the pistons out and ended up breaking all the ring glands.
Keep you eyes & ears open, there are usuallly small blocks lying around or sitting in wrecks that can be had for cheap. If you put the word out, something will come up.
454+.60 over=468 ci.That's what I'm running with 781 oval ports,flat tops,280H Magnum hydraulic Comp cam,Edelbrock Performer with a 750 Holley dual feed,mechanical secondaries,1 7/8 in tube headers w/ 3 1/5 in collectors into 2 1/5 in Aluminum exhaust out behind the rear wheels.Produces 375hp @ 5200 and 478ft/lbs @ 2900 on the dyno at the flywheel.Pulls the 'Chief pretty hard w/ a 4 spd and 3:08 gears.

why dont you just replace the rods with new. scat has decent entry level rods at competative prices compared to a rebuild and they are balanced. i dont even bother recycling old parts anymore its not worth it as far as durability.
money is the big issue if i have to spend 800 bucks on a engine im going to replace 5 years down the road i just don't want to if i could get a small block to fit into her for 400 bucks or less thats what im going to do. at this point im my life i don't have enoguh money for this car i know it was a mistake to take on such a big project my family calls it a learning experiance well ive got to learn these things some how eh?
Did you get a quote for the machine work to your 283 ? You might be better off to find an engine that's running, with all the rusted vehicles out there it shouldn't be that hard to find something. There's no way yer going to build an engine for $400.00 or even $800.00
Glad to hear that you are determined. I've never rebuilt an engine, but given the amounts being mentioned, I would think dropping a runner in would be the only way to stay under that budget, just an opinion. 30 years ago, or so, an old man went out of his way to help a young stranger.....me. I was your age and living in a detention center in Montreal. I reluctantly accepted his offer for help. It was free help with no strings attached. The past few years have been my time to pay it forward, and I have been. My intention was to administer a collection that the end result would be an engine left at your residence. It wouldnt be totally free, you would just have to do the same, once you are at a point in your life when its possible. Most people are struggling these days, and dont have the resources or will to help a neighbor. I have some friends in southern Ontario on the hunt right now. If stuff happens, and an engine shows up at your place ,and you dont need it or want it, you mother wont let you just leave it there, sell it to help fund the rest of the project! It is a long shot, and I will pm you before having anything left at your house. Good luck and never give up. I wonder what percentage of projects as big as yours never get completed.....I would guess above 80%. But since you likely dont have a mortgage or kids, I'm hoping you'll be on the road with your car.
