454 bbc - header install - clearance question

I've hired help from the guy who did my Flowmaster setup to install my new headers. They appear to offer a little more clearance than the old cast iron, but its too close to call for me. He is a perfectionist and did a fantastic job with the exhaust. I know that I should have done the headers at the same time, but that didnt happen. I had scheduled a half-day with him on Saturday, but he didnt start because he would not finish in a half-day. I'm not worried about the labor bill, but he says he needs to raise and tilt/cant the engine slightly for the drivers side to go on. This has me concerned. If thats was has to happen, so be it. I would love to hear from someone who has installed headers on a mounted 454 in a 67 Beaumont.

What kind of headers are they? Yes you will definatly have to lift the motor a bit. It's a very tight fit in there. I put cheepo Flowtech ceramic coated ones in my 67 and had to cut out an inch of tubbing from one tube to get them to clear the crossmember. Headers in a no fun job.disbelief

The Headers/Hedders are Hedman. I also bought some aluminium gaskets, apparently even better than copper. They werent cheap, but there is no comparison to the gaskets that came with the kit. The gaskets are Flow-Tech. I believe the parent company is Holley, and their headers have improved greatly if you trust reviews and their gaskets are #1. I tried to research as best as I could, but found that some people have their favorites headers for their own reasons, and arent going to change for the most part. After all the research, this is one job that I am glad that I am not doing myself.

I feel better already about the engine being lifted, thanks Paul!

You'd be winning the lottery to have them drop in without having to lift the engine... the steering shaft makes it tight too... Shouldn't take too long to put them in, whether you have to lift the engine or not, but it is a pain in the a-s! Also you probably don't want them banged up, especially if they are coated!

Well you won the lottery....After buying and installing my headers i did a bunch of research to make it easier for next time. Most 67 chevelle BBC owners I talked to said headmans were "BY FAR" the best fit. Also I bought those same alluminum gaskets and they work great. Parts wise you hit the nail on the head.
