Chev 307 in a '67 Parisienne


Hi all,

 

I recently acquired a '67 Parisienne and it has a Chev 307 in it, replacing the siezed 327 that came in it originally.  I'm wondering what, if anything I can do performance wise with this engine.  I've heard this can be a bit of a dog, but can be maximized out at 235 hp.  If anyone has any ideas on how I can improve the engine in my car, please let me know.

I HAVE A 1968 IMPALA WITH A 307 AND PG TRANS. MY ENGINE HAS HEADERS, DUAL EXHAUST, 4BBL CARB (EDELBROCK 600CFM) AND A LITTLE BIGGER THAN STOCK CAM. IT'S PERFORMANCE IS BETTER THAN ANY 307 I HAVE EVER DRIVEN, BUT I THINK A STOCK 2BBL 327 WOULD STILL OUT PERFORM IT. I WOULD NEVER BUILD UP A 307 MYSELF. I BOUGHT MY IMPALA AS A DAILY DRIVER LARGELY BECAUSE THE DRIVETRAIN WAS FRESHLY REBUILT. I WOULD THINK RATHER THAN TRYING TO SQUEEZE POWER OUT OF THE 307, YOU MIGHT BE BETTER OFF WITH A STOCK 327/350. YOU WOULD SPEND THE SAME MONEY TO UPGRADE THEM AS YOU WOULD THE 307 AND THE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE TONS BETTER. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, BASED ON MY OWN EXPERIENCE.

I had a 307 in a Ventura II and it was a fast car..  4 speed, headers, 4 bbl   

Full size is a lot of weight   headers duals 4bbl will make it peppy and fun  but you need cubic inches to make it fast  

Figure out your budget and go from there...  $$$$ ====HP

The 307 was never intended to be a performance engine just like the 305 (except L69) it was a bread and butter good fuel mileage V8. People say they were dogs on fuel but really, installed in an Impala ya, it comes down to power to wieght. In a Nova, or Chevelle or pick up different thing. The thing is there are about 10,000,000 of them out there so you can get it cheap and for a few bucks you can have 300 HP. Afterall it is a small block and parts are everywhere. 

I think you will find the article I posted above interesting.  It is always cool having something different. Anybody can have a 327 or 350.

I had a 68 Impala with a 307 PG. Rebult the motor to stock specs and it had plenty of power to move that car.

not wanting to burst any ones bubble but a 307 is not a performance motor its a gm stopgap attempt combing a 283 and 327 unfortunetly it losses the good attributes of both motors, i would spruce it up a bit with boltons and keep my eyes open for the right 327 to come along. They are still around, then move the bolt ons over.

Thanks guys,

65 Wagon that is my plan...that being said I'll have to live with the 307 for a while, so I'd like to get the most out of it. As the car originally came with the 327/400 combination I'd really like to put it back in. But for know I will bide my time and fix the little things that require attention and go from there...

Well, if you want, I have a fairly complete 67 327 I bought a long time ago with plans of using it in my Acadian. However, I used a real Nova/Acadian block (they are different) so there it sits, in the way ,year after year!

I am told it ran ok but needs a rebuild. It has no carb, no brackets on it.

If you are interested, we can talk about it on Tuesday. I am not looking to profit on it but I won't be willing to take a loss on it either!

Neat thing is, it's from a 67 so would be correct for your car.

sounds like a darn good plan i will have some 68 four barrel suff off my 327 when i start to tare into it and if anyone wants the recipe to build a good 327 combo that wont break the buget, you guys runny quads dont know how luky you are

Agreed, not a performance motor but not as bad as it's made out to be. I had an 88 Caprice wagon with a 307 4 bbl Olds moto and an 89 Caprice cop car with a 305 SBC TBI motor. I'd take the 307 2 bbl over those dogs any day.

never said it was bad just not a 283 which would rev like mad but no bottom end or a 327 which has torgue and upper end its just a decent working grunt

 I'm running a home built 327 ( 350 block / 307 crank )   with 882 heads, a 67  4 bbl, and a 67 396 Quadrajet.  nice RV type cam,  I can look up the specs.

IT has lots of grunt and pulls hard up to 5000 RPM. backed by a glide and 3.23 gear with a tall tire.. 

It has impressed the heck out of me ! IT's in my 64 Custom Sport !

I agree with you on that too. I once had the chance to drive a  63 Impala with a modifed 327 and a PG. If you hit the gas even a little at 30 mph it would scream tires and go sideways.

Single best thing you can do for picking some performance for driving around in a full size is ditch the powerglide and put in a TH350 tranny. Bolts in, don't have to move crossmember or shorten drive shaft. Especially with a mini mouse like 283 or 307. Lower 1st gear gets the big barge moving easier.

Of course adding an overdrive is even nicer, but is more work.

im running forged flat tops with actual mesured 10.7 compression and a 350 hp cam with variable duration lifters. tons of torgue on regular fuel and almost 20hg of vacume to boot. you should see what ive been towing with this boat i almost 300 out of 70 litres
