I'm thinking '64 should be same system as '68 so my shop manual says disconnect the connector at the regulator and connect a testlight from #4 to ground with the ignition on. Hope this helps you.
Sorry about the blurryness. Basically if the dashlight glows problem is regulator or alternator. If not between switch and regulator connector.

Well, finally figured it out. Regulator. Part of the problem also was that one of the front wire harnesses at the firewall was hanging half way off while other other end (top) was proper. I had taken the regulator off my Chevelle and tried it still no light. Wiring??? Thats when I found the loose harness contection.
Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I think that firewall connector is a culprit for a lot of electrical problems. With my 2+2 was with the starting circuit - same connector.
