327 VIN Id

I have a 327 which has a casting number 3782870 (327, 62-65) a date code of E185 (May 18, 1965) My problem is the vin code stamped on the pad in the front is 855632136.

Most of the info I read says this should be a alfa numeric number.

Any idea what this number means??  Some have suggested it is a builders stamp from a machine shop, others claim stamping in the US and Canada was done differently.

I know that someone here can give me a straight answer!!smilesmile

Thanks,

Mike

It's a automatic trans, Canadian suffix 327. Only the L-79 motors of that vintage were tagged as American style suffixes. The size of the casting numbers will dictate whether it is a canadian block 250 hp small print casting number 870 or a large print 870 300 HP. This looks like a late built 65 year A body 327.

that would be the only number on the block the way they were for 300hp and down. The L79 engines came from Flint the only engine to have the suffix ( EC ) George at vintage GM maybe able to track the info by the engine number its self. Give him a call and ask the fee for that service
