looks like there is a air vent between the two astrays. If the passenger reached over to flick his ashes they would blow onto the driver . So they gave the passenger his own. Just my observation. Yes , No, .

It occured to me while attending the Iola Carshow in Wisconsin that many 63/64 chevys with factory a/c have an accessory ashtray mounted under the dash center. Only on air cars
Then i discovered that the 1965 impalas with factory air have a built in dual ashtrays on either side of the heat controls. They are only on A/C cars, regardless of convert, HT, caprice, Impala. Even the Factory assembly manual shows the second ashtray for A/C cars only
Anyone know that the theory was behind this dual ashtrays for A/C cars was??? What was GM thinking, and it seams to disappear come 1967ish.
Here is a Loaded up non-ac dash with one tray, vs a Factory AC dash with 2. No, niether car is a caprice, the owner added the woodgrain.
Hmmm, good idea. But i wonder if that was GMs intended thoughts too.
the 63/64 impalas had the vent there too, with the factory ashtray to the passenger side of the vent, the add-on accessory tray was to the left of center, so this is entirely possible Ian.
Anyone else have any thoughts??????
