My car has been running hot at idle lately. When I shut the car off when hot,the clutch fan still spins 3 or 4 turns and then you can spin it with your hand quite easily. Does this mean the clutch is no good?
Hopefully others will chime in as well but I have always been taught that when the engine is real hot, or cold before starting, the fan clutch should offer resistance and it should freewheel basically at normal operating temperatures.
As I say, no guarantees on that being 100% accurate.

I agree. I pulled the original 2 row rad in my car on the weekend and was that thing ever in poor condition. I dropped it at the rad shop this morning for a recore.
I picked up my new recored radiator this morning. I'll have to post pictures later. The most they could fill in the width of the tanks I had was a three row high efficiency, which is well over the cooling capability of a traditional 4 row. I'll add the story of this radiator and my clutch fan to the thread I have going on my 454 swap. CLICK HERE
Thanks, I think that I'll replace the clutch and see if it is any better.
Want to keep the original look, so no electric fan for now
I don't know which brand to recommmend but I should tell you I've had horrible experiences with aftermarket fan clutches. I'd be guessing but the failure rate on the ones I've sold is likely more than 75%.
