I'm getting closer to identifying where my engine originally came from. Anyone that can help me decode some of these serial numbers would be great. The engine is in my 67 Parisienne, but it was probably in a Chevy pick-up originally possibly a mid-80's Silverado. Here are some serial #'s and where I found them: 14057055 GM K 4 rear top of engine block; TF07043139 224552 passenger's side towards the back of engine block; 140323219TOR passenger's side front on a silver plate close to where you fill the oil, can see it in the photo, above exhaust manifold. There's also CANADA engraved at the rear of the block, bottom, facing down. Anyone know where this engine came from?
Oil filler via valve cover cap: 1969-on. EGR valve & HEI distributor: 1975-on (as well as that air cleaner with the provision for the flexible duct). As a red herring, GM stopped painting Chevy engines orange after 1976 & switched to Corporate Blue (not like it never could have been painted since...)
Carl has the right idea, see about the engine code on the machined pad on the right front deck of the block below the head (circled in white thanks to Carl).
Don't even drive that thing through southern Ontario or the MTO will fine you and force you to run a catalytic converter (I know, ABSOLUTELY REDICULOUS!!!)

You're aboslutely correct, there's something engraved there! Harder than I imagined to ungravel it, but as soon as I'm done without damaging the number I'll post it.
I'll stick to driving it in Quebec... The SQ even stop doing what they do, stare at my car and smile... A Montreal police officer once stuck his head out of the car and asked what year it was!
Big disapointment, Carl. I can only make out the top line which appears to be 53 077 but the 2nd line it's too thin to tell. I tried pencil and paper as if
to trace over a coin and then pushing hard aluminum paper (wife was wondering what on earth I needed the foil for) but that didn't work either. If I use
sand paper it'll ruin it. Any other ideas or does this help partly?
Hi Carl, I did the best I could with the sandpaper following your suggestion and this is the result. I can barely make out anything here; does this mean anything to you? I had to change the manifold gaskets as well as an exhaust gasket and guessing '86 Silverado did match the parts however I know those gaskets will match several other engines as well.
I was just looking through my Chevy Casting book and found that the number on the EGR valve can tell you the engine year, size, and model of vehicle it came from. That is if the Intake belongs there and as long as the EGR valve is not an after-market one. The number is stamped on top of the diaphram and is the GM part number. Post the number and I'll check my book. Worth a check.

Should start either 70 or 170 so yours most likely changed to an after-market. You can also use distributor number (again if it belongs). Should start with 110 or 111 . Or as Carl said, go for the block numbers.

Wow, I''ve never seen one pitted so bad. I think the only way will be with the casting number off the back of the block below the drivers side head.I think that is what you listed a few posts back but those numbers didn't work for me.

Carl, those numbers were 14057055 GM K4. By the way, the engine runs and sounds excellent, no vibrations. Starts on the first shot too. But who knows what it went through in its past.
It appears that 14057055 is the number off the intake manifold. Can you go farther back on the engine and look on the block behind the passenger side cylinder head?

Look at the 2 arrows in the photo which I just took from the passenger side. The top arrow indicates where the 14057055 GMK4 is and the bottom arrow showswhere the TF 07043139 224552 are. Note the "3" in 0431 I'm not sure if it is a "3" and the first "5" in 224552 I'm not sure if it is a 5. If you feel I'm not looking in the right place, by all means add arros and let me know where I shoud be looking.

Ok..I'm confused on this MTO thing. If the vehicle is legal in the province it is registered and insured in, MTO can stop me all they want..but they can't force the owner to do jack as it meets the requirements of the province it's registered in. For example, if I'd put say a 5.7L Corvette motor in my 67 2+2 and then drove to Ontario to visit family, and it met all existing emissions standards here in AB where it's registered..the MTO can stop me all they like to do an emissions test..I'm not an Ontario resident, the vehicle isn't registered there..they are out of luck if they think they can order any changes to the vehicle. The only way they could fine me or order things fixed is if something was broken or not working..ie a broken tail light or the exhaust was hanging off of it..But if Alberta says I don't need a cat..they can't order one installed
It's not the MTO but the MOE [ministry of enviroment] & yes they could!! Same as our Big rig truck law that states they have to be Goverened at 105 KM/hr. Any Big Rig coming into Ont. Has to have computer Gov. for that speed & then change it when they leave. I've seen the Enforcement pulling trucks over just after they enter Ont. & assuming this is what their checking for??? Now wether the MOE would go after a "car" from out of Prov. for our STUPID Emm. laws is doubtfull?? But you never know if they have a "slow" day????

I find it hard to believe Pete, esp working in the Law Enforcement field..I know when Ontario brought in..or tried to bring in the anti-street racing legislation which would/did allow law enforcement in Ontario to seize vehicles caught street racing, it was only for cars registered in Ontario. Out of province vehicles could only be impounded for 48 hrs I believe it was..it also included vehicles that had been modified with performance upgrades should police find them...
I know it's apples and oranges, but this illistrates that Ontario did not have the ability to sieze vehicles registered in other provinces. Here again they would not have the authority to a) order an immissions test or b) order the driver to have cats installed..as it would be an infringement on the rights of the owner, in my case as an Alberta resident..again assuming my vehicle meets all regulations in the province it's registered in.
I'M FROM ALBERTA. IF THEY EVER TRIED TO TICKET ME, SEIZE MY CAR, OR TRY AND MAKE ME CHANGE ANYTHING ON IT (ASIDE FROM SAFETY ISSUES) WHILE I WAS VISITING ONT. DUE TO THIER RIDICULOUS EMMISSIONS LAWS, THEY WOULD BE SPENDING A PILE OF ONT. TAXPAYERS MONEY IN COURT! BOY, WOULD I HAVE FUN WITH THEM.
