Power vent window repair

If anyone has a GM full size with power vents that don't want to move any more (but you can hear the motor run, or at least try to) the problem is likely a piled up gear in the gearbox. Hydro-E-Lectric sells the replacement gears online and they are an easy part to replace. I did both mine this morning before installing the vent motor/gearbox assemblies.

Here is what the assembly looks like removed from the car. The new gear is on the table beside it.

When you remove the 2 bolts holding the motor to the gearbox, as well as the one little nut, this is what you will see when you separate it.

At this point, you simply lift the gears out. This is likely what you will find, a munched set of teeth.

I cleaned up and applied new white lithium grease to everything. A little tip that Fake68 (Gary) passed along to me was that the reproduction gears, although much better because they are steel, are a touch too tall and bind when you tighten the assembly back up. I solved this by replacing the little washer on the shaft of the gear with a thinner washer, creating a tiny bit of vertical slack in the assembly.

Sorry, I have no video to post showing them in operation because the camera card was full when I tried to make a video today!

Open them up Michael, even if they work. It's real easy. Don't be shocked if you find bad gears. My other one worked but the gear was about 50% shot compared to the unit in the picture.

The original gear is not a steel gear I don't think, although it feels heavier than aluminum. The gear is made that it stops in the housing but I think the problem is the motor keeps trying to push farther.

Ya, it looks like white/pot metal.

Are the front main/rear window gears similar?

No, power window mechanisms are made completely different than this. As far as I've seen, the only thing the power vent setups have that in common is the basic part of the motor, the housing and guts. The gearing is all a totally different design.
