I am having trouble removing the starter on my 66. It has a 350, muncie m20 and headers. When I removed the starter bolts there is not enough room to get the starter out. It hits the front crossmember ,not enough room to move it forward and back. Do I have to remove the header and try to move it to the side? The car was originally an auto trans - does a 4 speed have a different starter?
Guys are correct on this!! My 52 sitting on a 84 Cutlass chassis has that problem, even with a "MINI" starter I still had to "lay" the right header back & down to change it out!!!! Carl said it all, they don't get along!!!!

You may have this magical sweet spot where the starter will come out in an up right position... I've always been able to take mine out without removing the header (similar car to you).... But it took lots of prayer, swearing and banging around... And after 20minutes it would literally fall thru and on my head...seriously, you'd think after 25 years I'd get it out right away, but it's always the same routine! Loosening the header would probably be faster... I had the benefit of a hoist at home, so I could do this standing...if not I'm sure I would have bought a mini starter!
I've got the "Mini" gear reduction starter on the 52 for clearance due to the headers, a "stock" starter wouldn't fit in there, & I put one on the 64 Catalina!!! Both turn the engines over when HOT & crank them way faster than the old style!!!

if you got big tube headers more than likely you may have to unbolt them at minimum. auto, standard tranies have different snouts as do the small fly wheel to big fly wheel starters
