Quick rear axel question guys

Noticed an old 67 impala ss and a few spare parts sitting on the side of a guys house today, thought i'd take a look and ask what he was doing with the car, course he's not selling it,however we got talking about cars which mine caught his interest and he tells me he has an old 70 Kingswood wagon in his back yard...no good except for the 12 bolt underneath, told me if i gave him my 10 bolt and $50 i can have it...but he wasn't certain if it's a direct swap.

so obviously my question, are we talking a direct bolt in?or can i expect a fight?

any info would be appreciated,I've googled but have found mixed results..was hoping someone here has attempted and succeeded.

That would be a bolt in. Just make sure you get the driveshaft too. It may or may not have different U joints and I think the driveshaft length is different too.

Also, you need to think about ratio. Chances are good it will be a higher ratio in the 70 which is worse for power, better for fuel economy. You need to decide what you want.

And one more thing, you can get the code off the front of the right hand side axle tube. That will tell the ratio and also if it's a posi or not.

If it's a posi, it might have a tag bolted under one of the cover bolts.

As well as a red plastic tag on the filler plug.

The posi's have a unique plug but I don't know if I have one to post a picture. I'll look some time.

For sure, when I swapped out my 10 bolt for the 12 bolt,I had to have the upper "U" shaped shackle/bracket made.My buddy just took a piece of H.S.S.(hollow strutural steel-square tubing) and cut one side off, rounded the edges, drilled some holes and wholla-an upper bracket,Just for kicks,we also made some shims just in-case I needed them.Only took us about 1/2 hr to 45 minutes.Thougt I would share how easy it actually is.Then again,it ain't rocket science!!

Spend some big bucks and get a 12 bolt   You will be happy, when you go full time drag racing.......

Pretty much true, yes. Around there the 12 bolts are not real hard to find, and I'm sure it must be similar in most areas. Best to build a 12 bolt.
