Hey, the piece in the pic is behind the steering wheel, and the plastice pipe goes through it and has a spring in it. My question is, what goes between the horn buttons and the steering wheel that attaches to this for horn operation? This is for a 1968 Parisienne. And where can I get what I need?
Most GM are all same. Wire grounds to metal. So when you press on horn it makes contact and sounds horn. They work on all cars that way. Unless you buy a grant gt steering wheel where they never work. Just go to any wreckers. Old pre 80 GM should work. Pop strg wheel cap off. Set up same.
I think you're looking for a small harness that has the two horn contacts on it, which goes to a center pin which goes into the plastic pipe. I grabbed a couple photo's off ebay, they're identical to the setup on my 70 Laurentian. Yours might be the same type of setup.
what are you missing? The large plastic piece is called the shroud, do you have that? Do you have the buttons? Do you have the wiring? If I'm not mistaken, I think 69 Impala and Canadian Pontiac used the same steering wheels (the 69 guys can chime in on that) were the horn buttons are more square. I think I have the wiring part from a 69 Impala.
I grabbed these photo's off ebay, it's 69/70 Impala. Is this what yours is like? If not, can you post photo's?
ok, it's a different wheel than I thought, but same principal. What you need is the wiring from the brass connectors on the horn buttons to the center pin that goes into the plastic pipe. A critical piece is the small plastic piece with a ridge on it that holds the pin into the plastic pipe against the spring. I was in the garage, and found the one that I think is from a 69 Impala. While the contacts are different, you should be able to use the wires and connect them to your brass connectors. Then you're done.
Looks like this. Spring and pin kit and plastic insert to keep in in. check on ebay.
That kit is available from GM. part@ 474102 but he needs the harness of two wires like seventy2plus2 mentioned
This kit is not required in this configuration. Just needs the two wires and the small plastic piece that will hold it into the other plastic pipe. Same basic theory as on my Laurentian.

So that explains why mine did not have one. I am also in the prosess of putting my column back together after about 20 years and got to that point and noticed just a spring. I had one of those pins of a camaro so I put it in . I had not yet put the rest of the horn wiring back on and like you said after looking at the wiring on mine I just need to put that small plastic piece on the end of my wiring in instead of that pin. Thanks for directing me in the proper direction. And thanks hd78glide for asking the same question. Now just have to pull that pin out before I forget and end up asking this same question a couple of years from now.
