fuel gauge not working

Damn! Pulled the car out of storage, fuel gauge not working on my 68 Parisienne! Sitting at half tank. Put 30 bucks in, that is how I know it isn't working.

Mine did the same thing this year. Besides being the price of gas, cause 30 bucks is not alot to move a guage your sender might be stuck. My fix was to remove and clean all electrical connections at the tank and dash unit, put electric grease on the fittings, bounce the rear of the car. It is working now, todays gas can eat the float switch or the residue from it can stick the float. Good luck

If you could find a wooden yardstick from a Hardware store  (I have a xtra )

with your filler neck style

you could mark it with a sharpie and use it

I did that with my 65 Volkswagen wink

Those sending units are so easy to remove even with a little bit of fuel.Just jack up the front of the car so the fuel goes to the rear of the tank then simply remove the unit.I had to do the same in my 'Chief when I found that my sending unit wasn't working as well.It took longer to jack the car up than it did to replace said unit. That's what I would start with.Maybe it just needs to be cleaned out from sitting over winter.

I don't have to remove the tank to replace the sending unit?

I'd say you have to remove the tank to replace the sending unit.  I had to replace the sending unit on the 454 Laurentian last year.  The fuel tank straps loosen by the back bumper, then drop down to release the tank.   On mine, the tank needed to slide forward a bit for the filler neck to clear, then the whole tank came out.   With the tank on the ground I could remove the sending unit.    There is no way the sending unit could have been removed without removing the tank.

Yes, for sure 66 will come out without removing the tank but I'm not sure about your 68. The tank is really easy to drop anyway so in the long run it's not a big deal either way.
