Dash Removal...? 64 Parisienne...

OK,it's TIME to change out the dash (chrome plated pot metal part) that houses the speedo and control switches....

Took one apart  years ago but think I pulled upper & lower out as a unit.....

Once the dash top is OFF can the chrome dash be removed (pulled straight up) without disturbing the lower painted metal section?

I've "torn" (no finesse) apart a dash, and took it out whole. I wasn't looking to take my time. One thing I can remember, is that even on the bench, some of the bolts holding the chrome upper to the painted metal lower were hard to get at. I think because of the location of the heater controls, radio, cig. lighter, light switch, etc.

I can't remember if the chrome upper is threaded for the bolts or the painted lower. Like I said, I just tore them apart for the parts that were usable!

Sorry, I can't give you more to go on Brian.

OK,had a good look underneath the dash and the replacement bezel...there is 8 threaded studs on the bottom of the bezel and I could see 7 of them......they appear to be reasonably accessable wrench-wise.....the one I can't see is hiding behind the glove box.

Think I'll give it a whirl.

Like I don't have a problem taking the lower metal part out..... but if I do,it will want to get painted and that will take the car out of commission for longer than I want to at this point in time...it's a convertible...daily driver & SUMMERTIME!

had a look as well today, there are also 2  bolts from top in each corner.you will have to pull the dash pad to get at them. 3 behind the glove box from the bottom. you also have to pull  the headlight switch and wiper, and whatever else is mounted to the chrome bezel.

not sure if you've ever pulled the dash pad, but you have to remove the cowel vent painted steel piece.  there are 2 studs hidden there for the dash pad.

get at er...

OK,it's all apart.........about 2 hours working at a reasonable pace.....

All 8 of the nuts were reasonably easy to get at...

Looks like I WILL paint the metal lower section, but probably do it in the car...

I've pulled the pads off of several of these...3 I think.... and never found any nuts on those locating studs or evidence of them once having them..

dash3.jpgdash5.jpgdash7.jpgdash9.jpgI had the dash panel out of the 64 Cat a yr. or so ago, no nuts on the loc. pins either so didn't have to pull the cowl v& wiper panel either!! I re painted the lwr. section of dash "in the car", & replaced the 'wood ' facia on dash too [US car]

I've heard of this before from other people, funny, they must have left them off at the factory?confuse Mine was still attached by 2 nuts under the outer cowl vent as per what Roger said.

I masked and sprayed (rattle can) my '68 442 vert's dash while it was in the car. Turned out nice ... semi gloss black.
