Greaser - Thanks much!! I think I can rig up new internals for my old charger from the circuit diagram in your link. The old charger is fine - except for the resistors and printed circuit board. Based on the circuit diagram, I should be able to just solder the components together and attached them to what's left of the PCB.

I also see a procedure for converting it to Lithium Ion batteries.... That might be a good way to go too, except I think the Li-ion batteries are about the same price as a new drill!
http://www.instructables.com/id/Converting-Cordless-To-Lithium-Li-Po/#step3

I suspect the resistors I picked up previously were rated at too low a current. Might have to get heavier ones or maybe run a bunch in parallel.   Thinking about it though, I need to check the transformer in the charger - that's possibly the culprit. Either way, after seeing how simple the circuit is, I think I can figure it out.  Sure beats tossing the whole thing in the dumpster!

Thanks again
Wes

 Wes,

Although Lithium Ion batteries are better, the NiCads can get extended life using a welder. http://www.instructables.com/id/Revive-Nicad-Batteries-by-Zapping-with-a-Welder/

Does it work? You bet.

My son worked at a place that was tossing out 18 NiCad 14.4 batteries,3 drills (heavily coated in paint and glue) and 3 chargers.

We took them home and I zapped all 18 at the shop with the Mig Welder...that was a few years ago and to this day they still charge up nicely and keep the charge.

My son Pete,a film maker used the old drills and extra batteries to make led lights for his filming....http://kominek.ca/?p=12

You can't zap Lithium batteries. I bought a Craftsman drill set at a garage sale for $10...zapped the dead NiCads and they have been working for 3 years now.

I'm reluctant to go to Lithium because getting  the NiCads is cheaper...the more you have the longer you can use the drill.

Ok, Winter is only a week old and I'm already sick of it. Here's what's coming Sunday/Monday:

Image

The locals tell me this was the first white Christmas in a decade. Wouldn't you know it the first winter out here we get hammered..

The charts apparently show another "major" snowstorm Jan 7-8..

I'm actually enjoying it. I like the kind of white, powdery snow we've been getting instead of sloppy wet snow.

It's just all the shovelling (especially after dark) that is losing it's charm with me.

Maybe "sick" was a bit harsh. On the bright side I can walk all over my property without getting attacked by mosquitoes!

Blizzard here this morning. Only five or ten cm they say but wind and cold. Yesterday was gorgeous, I spent about half my day outside pulling parts, doing stuff in the yard, it was great.

I am thinking a dually Sub would have to be a conversion, at least that one, cause it's says 2500 on the door.

Almost exactly at this moment 45 years ago, the phone rang. We had dropped my dad off at the hospital 2 hours earlier, after he finished a curling game. He had chest pains. My 16 year brother took the call, said a few words, hung up, turned to his 11 year old brother (me) and smply said "Dad died". 45 years later I'm still thankful for the best dad a boy ever had.

Sorry to be so mushy on a "guy" forum! I'm sitting here 45 years later and I still think I'm the luckiest guy in the world to have been born into the family I was, and to live where I do.

I walked out of the local Home Hardware to find an older lady removing snow from the rear hatch of my wife's Toyota Echo. I said "thanks". She said "I was just trying to see what kind of car it was". It's funny here.

It still hurts, but the memories of him never fail to make me smile-

Seeing him on water skis the summer before

Sitting in the boat fishing with him

Swimming in the pond with him after a hard days work in the tree nursery

Reading the Stevenson Family history book he wrote 2 years before he died

The frequent (but very gentle) teasing

And lots more...

I came across an article that was published in PM I believe that had test results of different penetrating oils in a lab setting. ATF and acetone was #1 and Kroil was #2 all the rest were far behind. PB tested only marginally better than WD-40. I've used PB for years, and like its, but was shocked by the test results.

I found some info, but not the actual article

"Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.
Don't forget the April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison
test.

*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with
the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a
"scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone.*
*Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about
as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. "

Did you know that Dexron originally included sperm whale oil as a friction reducing additive? They had to re formulate (hence Dexron II) after sperm whale imports were banned in the USA.

I wonder if the acetone/ATF mix was the original Dexron or a newer version.
