66 - 67 SS console insert question.

I'd like to re do the woodgrain panels on my 66 console I got from Carl, and I see that there is replacement brushed stainless inserts available a-la 67 Impala SS and CP 2+2, Grande.

Just curious as to how they are applied? Do I pull up the woodgrain inserts first, or do the new panels sit right on top?

The originals seem really glued down secure.

Anyone ever done this?

I just purchased a 66 Caprice console door from a fellow CT'er. I would like to remove the wood grain laminate insert from the door and replace with the brushed stainless Impala insert.

Does anyone have experience as to how to safely remove the laminate (boling water, heat gun, chemical, etc)?

Thanks

Dave

Equal amounts of patience, 3M adhesive remover and heat.

Is the console door metal or plastic?

It's metal.

If I recall correctly my memory is excellent. My ability to access it is not.

We use a tool in our shop called an eraser wheel. It removes heavy adhesive left behind when side moldings are removed. We also use it to strip decals and stripes from cars. The tool attaches to a die grinder and melts the stripe or glue off. It does generate some heat, but won't hurt the console door if it's metal. Here,s an eBay link for the ones that we use in our shop;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASTRO-400E-SMART- PINSTRIPE...

You can also pick them up in local parts stores that sell refinishing products. The other option is soaking the door in adhesive removal. We have a tank at the shop that's filled with a solution that softens glue and adhesive. We usually drop a side molding in for a few days and it comes out clean. If you live any where close to Pgh PA, I'd be happy to drop it in our tank for a few days for you.

I had some acetone in the garage. Once I was able to work it behind the insert, it came of in seconds. I then soaked the remaining adhesive on the door with more acetone and covered with a plastic bag (tightly) for about a minute, as it evaporates quickly.

The acetone softens the adhesive and you can scrape off with a putty knife.

NOTE: If you're going to do this, do it in a well ventilated area.

Next questions: Does anyone have a source for an impala console door insert and what adhesive to use to apply?

The aluminum inserts are available quite often on E-Bay. I'm sure I've seen them in the vendor catalogs as well.

Careful!!! The ones that I have seen look like garbage, Seems like the man behind the tool they used has never put a satin brushed finish on anything before. You couldn't pay me to put those on my car. I have seen some people that didn't seem to mind them though. One thing for sure if you replace the door you are going to want to replace all of the console top pieces. On mine we used stainless steel inserts that we made out of 4B stainless. It is a bit too shiny but easier to clean and looks awesome. Here is a pic of the inside of my 66. I will see if I can get a better pic of the console. Brandon

Thanks Carl.

So, it's basically thought that the old inserts should be removed with some acetone, a heat gun and some gentle prying. Then you completly remove all the glue residue from the parts.

Probably a good Idea to buy a new set first, to see what I'll be puttting back on. Sounds like there might be some differences in quality. I'll talk to NOS and find out.

Would you affix the new ones with contact cement, or would you use some kind of silcone adhesive? With the contact cement you really would only have one shot at getting them right, wouldn't you?

Methalhydrate also works well on removing glue residue and pitch on your paintjob without hurting your paint.

I think the brushed stainless looks nicer.

Hi cdnpont,

I am in total agreement with those who used Acetone. I replaced the insert on my '64 CS factory 4 speed console, and the Acetone did a fantastic job of removing the old glue. The Acetone did not harm the console in any way. As far as fastening the new one, 3M tape does a fantastic job; plus it gives you more wiggle room than any kind of adhesive.

         Great heads up  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

so when you get tired of the ugly tuner car stainless crap   you can easily add woodgrain and make it look great again

I wonder where I can get RED heater hoses?

You know Carl, if I could get inserts in somthing matching the "gorgeous factory Burlwood" on my Grande's dash, then I'd just do it in that. And the "gorgeous factory woodgrain" on the console is starting to resemble cupboard mac-tac from 66.

The 67 Grande 2 door console car had the "Burlwood" with the SS console inserts. Imop, I think it would have looked better if it matched the dash. I guess GM of Canada didn't want to go to that level of detail or expense on the 67 Grande. Around 2000, 2 doors wasn't enough to warrant the cost?

Wrecks dash.JPG

Any ideas on how to get some kind of material matching my dash?  How about getting 3 Grande  glove box doors and using that material? I'm open to suggestions!

Carl,

I haven't looked into red heater hoses YET. However, I love my new RED "socks" that protect my plug wires from my headers. Now that's a real HEADS UP!

Did some digging and found that the 67 Grand Prix had a console with Burl wood inserts that look very similar to the 67 Grand dash in pattern and (at least on my screen) Colour.

The GP had a console unique to its Pontiac Motor Division. And I could not find any clear evidence that the 67 Bonny ever came with a console.

What I did find, was that OPGI and some of the other bigger houses have a vinyl replacement kit for the USA GP. And I hoped it might provide me enough material.

Now, it's not as nice as having metal backed inserts, but really, since this is custom, the wood imop would look better. Kind of how it should have looked in the Grand.

The GP die cut vinyl kit,

GP01064-lrg.jpg

The dimensions of what I'd need from the above,

DSC_2557_edited-2.jpg

DSC_2559.jpg

Now judging by the distance at the lock opening (likely the same GM lock), looks like I might come up a little narrow.

Now I'm wondering if I could get this material in a sheet from somewhere???hmm
