....I was never a numbers guy, but I have had dozens of 58 chevs and pontiac's. Any engine # with 9V on the door tag was a 283 car, any with 9D was a 348 car , just numbers with no letters was a 6 cyl car. Don't recall what 59 up was but somebody here should know more than me about it. I think the tag # after the 9V was just a specific engine number which matched the number on the engine pad.
I still don't think that number will tell build date. If it has the original intake manifold on it then the intake will have a date code on top between the back of the carb and distributor. The 9V is 283 , 280505 is just the specific number of the engine is what I believe.
9 would be the year-'59-I'm guessing. V would be the plant where it was assembled. 28G505 would be the last 6 digits of vin. I have a 283 at work I'll look at.Be best to get the casting # on the back of the block. That is a very odd number sequence though. I checked the 283 at work and the casting # of the block should be 3556519 '58-'61 2 bolt only.
