I came across this complete electronic ignition setup at a swap meet. Anyone heard of Stinger? Any good? Worth my while to put in or just resell? I figured the distributer is worth the price of the whole setup so not out much.
Stinger is a good quality ignition. The company was started in the 1970's by Bill Hays, who was the owner of Hays Clutches. He sold the Hays clutch business and started the Stinger Ignition business (Midway Industries). He wanted to call it Hays Ignition, but was unable to, because of contract with Mr. Gasket. Then, a few years later Mr. Hays founded the Centerforce Clutch Company. Midway Industries is alive and well in Prescott, Arizona but I don't think the Stinger Ignition brand is still around. It is pretty amazing how many changes there have been in the past 30 years or so in the High Performance Aftermarket Automotive industry.
They were popular in high RPM applications as they were able to maintain desired timing advance to about 10,000 RPM.
Most all electronic units retard timing above about 5,000 RPM.
this is the same system used in my record holding 1940 studebaker(455 olds powered) gasser in 1969-74, i have a complete package and extra parts if anyone has needs
