Convert your original stock radio to modern


Not sure what forum to post this in so feel free to move it to the best place.

I haven't heard of this company before, but a fellow on a Chevy site used them and liked them. They take your crappy not working stock radio and convert it to modern technology. And for those of us with old Pontiacs with only AM, they add FM. Plus MP3, USB, Bluetooth, and it looks completely stock.

New 180 Watt PLL AM/FM Stereo Conversion

Keep that original look - Replace that old sound!

Have your original factory radio converted to AM/FM Stereo with an audio output power of 45 watts per channel x 4 channels - 180 watts total. The new Aurora Design conversion board uses Phase Lock Loop technology to keep you locked on station and a more powerful 4 channel audio amplifier. This new board will bring your original radio up to state of the art performance. 

Features:

  1. 1 to 4 channel amplifier operation with up to 45 watts per channel - 180 watts total power. User switch loudness contour.

  2. Conversion radio checks for number of speakers connected at turn on and automatically selects mono/stereo switching based on number of speakers connected. Activates virtual balance and/or fade functions based on which speakers are connected.

  3. The existing tone control can serve as virtual left/right balance control and front/rear fader control for four channel operation. No longer necessary to add additional  controls to the back or bottom of the radio.  Can also use original tone switch to change volume control to a full function tone/balance/fade control.

  4. If your radio has the original factor front/rear fader control in good condition, we can wire this control as a stereo front/rear fader control.

  5. Stereo auxiliary input added to your conversion radio for portable CD, portable cassette, your old under dash Delco 8-track player, MP3 player, XM radio, Apple iPod/i-Phone/i-Pad through headphone jack, etc.

  6. USB 2.0 Port option allows your MP3 music library to be copied to a USB flash drive and played through the radio.

  7. Bluetooth option allows wireless hands free cell phone and music streaming  from your Smart phone. Also supports voice commands if your phone has this feature.

  8. Speaker wiring and voltage level diagnostics run ever time the radio is turned on. Will report incorrect wiring on error condition.

  9. Radio conversions can be setup to run on 6 or 12 volt, negative or positive ground.

That looks like a good conversion. I like how the system detects mono or stereo speakers and if they are wired wrong.

I do radio restorations for a friend who sells vintage car parts. He signed on as a distributor for these folks as I wanted to try a conversion.

I did the conversion on my '72 Lincoln and '75 Ford radios. The boards are programmable at the time of conversion for a myriad of configurations and include appropriate wire harness. The sound is fantastic, FM reception/selectivity/stability is great as is the sound via audio input. The AM reception is awful unfortunately.

Like any high power solid state audio, speaker lines must not be grounded and connections must be solid. New speakers best as the conversion is much more powerful than any stock radio. My Lincoln retains original speakers, odd ball size in each of 4 doors, so I'm careful not to push them.

I don't think I could eviscerate a lovely/vintage tube radio to do a conversion - seems blasphemous.

The website has a dealer locator and also shows a bunch of neat stock looking new radios, I think some applicable to 60's Pontiacs.

 

The boards are expensive and its a lot of work to result in a quality job - so conversions are expensive.
