Ignition switch started acting up today
Start the car runs for a second and stops as soon as you release the start section of the switch
If you JUST barely hold the key in start position after it starts it will run but obviously some thing is shorting because it instantly smokes
I figure the ignition switch is screwed but wondered if I was missing something obvious.
I have unhooked the negative cable to be safe.
Any ideas or suggestions?
I don't have experience with it on the cars but I work at a dealership and have seen the older GM grain trucks have that same issue when the ignition switch goes bad. I would say you did the right thing to park it with the cable unhooked. I would say it's best not to drive it until you replace the switch.

So the switch I ordered is for an impala
Turns out I need the Pontiac switch
I will return the impala switch tomorrow
And I just ordered the nos 116680 off of eBay
I should have paid closer attention to your words Carl.
Thanks again

Oh man, too bad.
The Impala stuff for our cars is for chassis parts but certainly most of the other stuff is either US Pontiac or unique to Canadian Pontiacs. I didn't check but I would be willing to bet the US Pontiacs are the same ignition switch as our's. At any rate, you are best off with an NOS piece, for sure.

I have been trying to getting an ignition switch for my 67 and it is one of the biggest pains. Even using your delco number the spades in the picture on the 2040-parts site don't match the ones on the ebay listing. Granted the picture could be mis matched. Best to be sure, as much as you can, the plug will match up. Can always hard wire it i guess, heh.

I found the spade layout differs, same connections in different spots and directions. Could just jump the connections if it was absolutely necessary with a complete switch failure. i haven't gotten that far yet, just looked to replace it.

If the plastic connector is right and you can figure out which wire needs to be in which port, it only takes a second to slip the pin out and slide it into the correct location. If you need help with that, it's real simple to do.

Makes sense, i will go for a match to the plastic connector since the wires are the same across ignitions. Thanks, sorry for sort of hijacking this thread.

Nos switch arrived in the mail a week ago.
Finally got a chance to work on the car.
Plug and play.
Worked perfectly!
I couldn't be happier!
I love my car!
Thanks for everyone's help finding the obsolete switch!
