1966 Air cleaner Paint

I'm trying to find the right gloss of paint for my air cleaner.

No luck yet. Has someone found something with the right gloss? So far all the semi gloss stuff seems too flat.

What I did for my 70 GTO I used tremclad 1/4's and added flat to the gloss paint until I got the desired gloss. Alternately tremclad spray bomb gloss is about 90% gloss, semigloss is about 60% and the flat is about 5%. Not concours but pretty good for a driver.

For concours the blacks actually aren't black but depending on the vehicle and area they had tints of blue or green if I recall correctly. I have no interest in doing a car at that level but some do.

Last option is to get a single stage mixed black from paint shop and experiment with adding flattener. I added some to the verdoro green I had left over from my 70 and sprayed the dash and rear window opening.

Good luck.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm looking for a spray bomb with the right gloss.

But I do have friends in the business, I guess I could get something mixed.

Interesting, all the gloss's I've seen have been super glossy, it just looks wrong. I'll have to check around Winnipeg next time in and see who has VHT.

I'm most concerned about it's appearance. Does it have the same shine as the original?

The semi glosses I see are all too flat. And the glosses too shiny.

Eric, I may check out that Tremclad too. I think I can buy it locally.

I  USE THE BLACK ACRYLIC LACQUER IN A SPRAY BOMB FROM HOME HARDWARE

GOES ON SMOOTH , AND JUST A LITTLE UNDER  THE GLOSS LOOK.

WORKED NICE FOR ME  .wink

Check with Eastwood. They have a whole line of paints for engine compartment detailing.

I've used Tremclad semi gloss to touch up wiper arms on my newer ('97 and '07) cars and it seems to have the right sheen for them.  I don't know if that's what you're looking for on your '66 but if you look at the level of gloss on most wiper arms that might give you an idea of the sheen for that paint (??)...

I've used Eastwood under hood black. But it can have a satin finish.

Paint it black, and drive it to get a layer on road dust on it. I sound like 427Carlbiggrin

I like Duplicolor spray paints.

I like Duplicolor and Krylon. Try some and then if its too glossy use a 800 of more grit to take the sheen off to suit your eye?

I spent a few hours in my favourite wrecking yard yesterday and picked up the correct rad spacer for when I put the big block in my car. Now I need to paint it too. I have to figure it out but I think it may be the same sheen as the air cleaner.

My local auto parts store has Plastikote. I tried a can of "Trim Black". Pretty close, but I'm not 100% happy with it yet. I can't get it to lay on as smooth as I'd like but I'll keep trying. I didn't paint it in very good conditions.

Does anyone powdercoated their air cleaner? I'm thinking of choosing this method since it is more durable than paint.
