Installing a Balancer with no crank bolt?

Just wondering what most guys do installing a balancer that doesn't have the crank bolt? Always worry about the thrust bearing and tried to pound mine on with a block of wood and hammer. That didn't work(engine in car) so I used my air hammer! Every time(about a thousand) I heard it hit I cringed!! Might have 40 thou end play on the crank but it's on! Is there a better way??

I always heat the center hub of the balancer with a heat gun, get it good and hot to expand it as much as possible,  then quickly take a block of wood and a large hammer.  The heating really helps.  Never had any problems with the thrust, knock on wood.

I use a Harmonic Balancer Installation tool. You can buy it at hot rod shops, or possibly rent one at your local parts store.   You can also get ones with interchangable tips for varying crank snouts.

If the crank is not drilled, that tool does not work

Ex all 283, small journal 327, and all straight 6s.  You have no choice but to hammer them on.

Heating them up really does make a big difference i have found.

Ya,  been there,  done it with motor installed in car,  not much room,   use a sledge sideways for the best clearance.

Thanks. Warmed it up a bit...but maybe not enough. Drilled and taped my 283 one.
