The 265 is a cool + for the car, not all that common I am betting.

I think what was meant is 261 not 265. 265 was the first Chev V-8 small block that came out in 1955 and 1956. In 1957 the 283 V-8 first came out as an option. The 261 six was standard issue of course.

The fellow who owns the yard is also elderly and kept calling the car a "56 Pontiac Pacifica" so there's no doubt he got the engine wrong but did say it was a V8.

Yeah, it's likely 'just" a 283 horse 283.

Early 57 chey's did have a 265 but then went 283 so shall we assume Cdn. Poncho's did the same??? Good way to use up left over engines before starting the bigger one!!!!

I was wondering that as well - IIRC the 265s in the '57 Chevs were a different colour, like chartreuse or something.

I stumbled across this 9-year old post by 57Pontiac earlier today, when thinking about this.

https://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/t36923572/1957-pontiac-documentation-and-brochures-now-online/

He posted a brochure on his site, that shows the 283 as the only V8 available, but I know sometimes these oddball things don't make it to the brochure, or could possibly be in an earlier brochure but deleted in a later one.

I noticed that the displacement of the six is noted as 235, which I believe is a mistake as I think all Pontiac sixes were 261s, so it's a good illustration of why you shouldn't take brochures as the bible.  After all, they are just shiny things trying to prompt you to buy a car - not intended as reference material...

Anyhow, here's his link to the brochure:

The 265 does appear in both the US and Canadian '57 Chevy brochures, however...

If you ever find a gold small-block in a '57 and it doesn't have a spin-on oil filter canister, that is what the 265 looked like for '57. Also the light duty trucks used the 265 as the top V8 through '57 (they were painted grey).

That '57 Pontiac looks like a nice find. It would be criminal to scrap that one.

265s were available only with 2bbl and 3spd trans in '57

'56 and later cast 265s had on block, spin on/canister filters

Yes there was a few left over 265's in 1957 that was put in American 1957 Chev's but they only came as two barrel engines. Those rare 265's in 57 were painted a very odd looking color and not orange like a normal Chev small block. I think the color was like a chartruise or a very ugly looking green color. That was to tell the assembly line works that they were dropping a 265 and not a 283 in the Chev they were building. As far as i know they never dropped 265's in 57 Pontiac's. Cheers.

Yep, a guy on PEI has one out of his '57 on a stand. I was wondering what the engine was until he told me.

Did any of the 265's have oil filters (canister style on the block)? Or was it just the 1955 265 that didn't have a canister style oil filter?

Kevin, nobody answered your question. Yes the floors, body mounts, inner rockers and complete trunk floor are exactly the same as the 57 Chev. Cheers.

No word yet. Will likely be a while as I had to send a letter to the owner by regular old fashioned mail.
