What a score!! a COMPLETE cruise control system from a 69 Parisienne

Yesterday I was at Flatla Auto Wrecking by Brooks AB and got a complete cruise control system from a 69 Parisienne.   I'd been looking for the white hardtop the last couple times I was there, but wasn't able to find it.   Upon stopping by the office when I was there a few weeks ago, they gave me better instructions on where it was, so I wandered over.   I was surprised to find it contained a COMPLETE OEM cruise control system.    I'd already been there for a few hours, and was kind of tuckered out so wasn't prepared to remove it at that time.

It took a couple weeks for Dale Flatla to get to the car and check it out, and then we agreed on a price.  Then we had to wait out the weather for me to make the return trip to remove it.

The 69 & 70 systems are the same (except 70 did a mid-year change from throttle linkage to cable), and someone has changed the signal lever to a later type, but that's ok.     Removal posed some problems under the dash, as space is in short supply, but I persevered.

It'll end up in my 70 2+2 ragtop, and I'm planning on changing out the dash next spring so that'll make the cruise installation a bit easier.

The surprising thing is, we've had a few members see the car before I did, and no one grabbed this desirable option off the car.

The 70 454 Laurentian had the cruise control option. It didn't work when I got the car, and after changing all the vacuum hoses it still didn't work. A replacement transducer solved the problem, and it certainly came in handy when I drove the car to Wichita KS for the POCI Nationals in 2014.

I expect this system will take some tinkering, but I'm looking forward to using it on my way to the POCI Nationals in Tulsa OK in July 2020.

The first thing to check on those is if the transducer is seized. It's very common for them to seize up and snap the speedometer cable. Otherwise they're pretty bulletproof. The best cruise lever you can get out of a wreck if from a car with no tilt. The tilt columns eventually work the wires back and forth enough that they break. We changed a number of them over the years on tilts and virtually never on the straight columns.

Good tip on checking the transducer, that'll be first on my list.
The turn lever is a different design (basically a Pontiac lever) and is reproduced but with varying comments. I also see the dealer installed units also used the Pontiac lever, and I have a suspicion this was dealer installed.

Cardone used to rebuild those units but I see they're listed on their site as obsolete now. Still some rebuilt units kicking around though.

I was talking to the local Cardone rep as he's been in the new Lordco store where I'm working helping set up. He said he could always get a custom rebuild done for me at their facilities in Philadelphia. I've seen rebuilt ones on ebay in the past, but nothing jumping off the page at me now. I knew Cardone had done them, but also saw their part # shows obsolete.

In the 90's there was a guy running a hardware store in a little town west of Winnipeg and he rebuilt them for our dealership. I remember waiting until I had 4-5 cores and then I'd mail them off to him for rebuild. We did that a few times a year in those days but I don't know if he's even still around.

I checked the transducer, it spins so that's good news. The servo also holds vacuum, so that's 2 good signs. A bit of the underhood wiring needs a little attention, but I'm going to invest in a new signal arm.

Please let me know when you visit this car again.

There is something small that I need off the car.

I'll make it worth your while twocents.gif

I saw that car when I was there in 2008 but I could not find it when I was there this past June. I did not look at it very closely the first time so I did not see the cruise control, but this is a great find for you. Congrats.

I do have my own story about Flatla finds though. In December 2008 I found two not quite complete sets of 69-70 full size disc brakes removed and sitting on the roof of a 70 Caprice wagon. I could not take them then and at that time Dale did not want to ship them. Needless to say I always kicked myself for not taking them.

Fast forward to June 2019. I found the wagon again, and all of the brake parts were still sitting on the roof just like when I photo'd them in Dec 2018. On top of that Dale also had a complete set in inventory that he had removed from a car a number of years ago. I bought everything, in effect 2 and 3/4 sets of original 69/70 B body disc brakes. Four spindles had surface rust but with a little labour they cleaned up nicely. Now I have a set for every car I own that currently has drums.

I was shocked the stuff was still there - and pleased I snagged them. Like Clint's find, it goes to show there are still a few desirable parts out there.

I think he moved the car a couple years ago, as the photo's previously posted showed scrap combines, etc in the background. That's what I was looking for last year, and when I was there a few weeks ago (it would have meant along the west side of his yard). It's now in the NW corner.

Re the 70 Caprice wagon, in 2015 I grabbed the disc brake proportioning valve by the master cylinder, and didn't even see the spindles, etc on the roof. I spotted them last summer, and bought the 2 rotors that were there, mainly for the disc brake hubs. I never thought to ask if he had any complete setups, but didn't really need any either. I'm sure you paid handsomely for what you got from him.

Here's a couple photo's of what I got.  The first photo is everything, and the second photo just kind of focuses on the goodies.

Why did I grab the brake pedal you ask?    If you look close towards the top of the arm, there's an orange spring.   From what I can tell, the clutch pedal cars and the cruise control cars use this spring to help lift the brake pedal up.   My automatic cars don't have that spring.

Notice how good the transducer & servo look.   No rust - except on the brackets.

The tranny to transducer cable was no good, so the photo includes one I had.  I'm hoping it's long enough, as it's at least a couple inches shorter than the original.   Also, I'm going to replace the turn signal lever, this one isn't very pretty, and the wiring looks like it needs some help.

I found a guy on ebay in Minneapolis who rebuilds transducers, so he did one up for me a couple years ago.

I've been trying to find the energy to install the cruise system, as I planned on doing it while the dash was out of the car.  The dash pad had a small crack, and was discolored.  I had a replacement dyed a couple years ago, and knew this was going to be a big job.  More on the dash change later.

I finally got the cruise control installed in my 70 2+2 convertible.   The worst part was laying in the drivers footwell installing the small bracket that holds the vacuum switch that is operated by the brake pedal.  What should be about a 2 minute job took somewhat longer.  Maybe if I had 3 hands it would have helped!!!   Leaning over the fender to drill holes in the firewall for mounting the servo was no picnic either.

I did a cam change (documented on Cdn Poncho) a couple years ago to increase engine vacuum.  That worked out well as the cruise works perfectly on the couple test drives I've done.

This new feature will sure come in handy on long road trips.
