Standard or advance timing light purchase suggestions

Hi all,

If I'm investing in a timing light light is it best I buy an advancing one?  Will probably use very rarely but

Wasnt sure if I should still spend the extra for the advancing feature especially as it would seem to benefit a novice mechanic?

Also I dont currently have an MSD ignition but may consider an upgrade in the future and understand the multiple spark can confuse some lights?

Any comments and suggestions on an economical model are also appreciated.

Wasn't sure if this was the correct forum so feel free to relocate if needed.

Thanks in advance..ha ha biggrin for any advice.

It was a no brainer for me, advance function built in. I could never see the marks clear enough to know where the timing was set. Highlight two marks and let the tool do the rest for me.

I use the advance timing feature all the time. i set it for total advance and when it reads 0 degrees , its bang on.
as it was said it is a feature you would use if you have poor visibility of the pointer and degree marks.

Were you ale to narrow down a model to purchase?  Were you looking at perhaps of one those Innova 3568 CT units or an older light off ebay?  I was curious as to what you decided on with regards to a particular model.

I haven't put a lot of thought into the advance timing lights, how do they work? If I want 8 degrees Before Top Dead Center, do I set it at 8 degrees and it will flash when the timing mark on my balancer is at zero?

Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

someone might go into more details, but thats the basic feature.
