I want to remove the radio. There's a hex screw on the right side holding it together to a brace next to glove compartment box. It's nearly impossible to reach. Any hints on how to remove it including how to properly remove the glove compartment box if easier to access through there?
Do you have a shop manual for your car? It describes tasks such as these.
Yes I do. Everything is straightforward except that where it says to "remove hex screw holding right side of radio to brace" doesn't take into consideration how one is to remove the screw. The diagram is also straightforward and very clear but omits the location of the glove compartment box and its proximity to the radio. There is no section in the shop manual about removing the glove compartment.
I'm surprised someone hasn't chimed in that has removed a radio from a 67-68.
I guess I'll be the guinea pig and take photos as I go along.
For the glove box unless someone describes a better method I'll remove the 2 screws holding the left hinge, then remove the rest of the screws for the door to come out and proceed from there.
DONE! I removed the radio by first taking out the glove compartment. Here are step-by-step instructions with pictures.
1. OPTIONAL: remove glove compartment door and left hinge that stops door at horizontal position. Removing door will make the light stay on but also gives you more space to work.
2. From glove compartment remove 2 right screws, then from the top the 2 towards the right and the one all the way on the left. No need to remove the hinges where the compartment door closes.
3. At this point let the box slide back and down (if you have a tissue dispenser or anything else underneath it will be in the way.)
4. Now on the left you can see the 5/16" hex screw holding the radio in place. Take it out.
5. Remove volume knob, spring, bezel, tuning knob & bezel (careful, there's a small spacer between the two that can easily fall out) Don't remove nuts yet.
6. Unplug wire harness from below / behind radio as well as antenna lead
7. Back to the front ... remove nuts holding radio through volume / tuning control. At this point the radio will loosen.
8. As the radio drops there is another harness in the back going to the speakers. You can unplug it now.
