crate engine and trans


so, just priced a 350 crate engine (300 hp) and 700R4 trans, with all the extra add ons 12K  What do you think people?

A couple of questions-

Is that installed price including sales tax?

Is the transmission the old style 700 or is it the newer style electric shift?

A dressed Chevrolet performance HO350 is about 8 CDN. So add a good 700R4 and you can hit 12 CDN easy. And be sure to put some aside to get it in the car and have it driving.

So yes. 12 is not out of line for that combo new.

I would not consider my following comments "advice"; however, I believe that the pricing is reasonable for this combination. When I purchased my '64 CS back in 1975, it still had its factory 327, 300hp, 4speed. Although this drive train was a reliable, responsive, and fun combination, it is no comparison whatsoever to the 350 DART engine, 396 stroker, 500hp and original, factory 4 speed that I have now. These are heavy cars. 300 hp will definitely get you where you want to go and be fun at the same. Personally, I would likely top up the hp by a 100 or so just to have some extra fun whenever the inclination strikes. I likely would not have gone with the engine I have if my car was an automatic. It all depends on what you personally want to do with your '66. Obviously, I am not a purist when it comes to cars; originality means nothing to me except in extremely rare circumstances. I merely suggest that you let your personal budget, personal preferences, and personal vision be the guiding factors in your build. I do wish you the very best in this undertaking.

If more torque need be an option, then consider a 383. They can be had for virtually the same cost.

One major item to consider is warranty. I just had a friend get a 4L60E transmission installed in a 2007 4x4 Silverado and the cost with a new starter and a couple of other items was $5500 Can.

Another thing to consider is the length of the warranty so do not buy the combo if it is not going to be installed when you get it from the dealer. Make sure you are completely ready to do the install.

I would also consider an upgrade in horsepower as the 300 hp only has 8.5 compression with old style large chamber cast iron cylinder heads with 76 cc chambers. These are good quality engines but your car is heavy so I recommend a 350 that has the vortec style cylinders heads from a 1996-1998 pickup truck.

In regards to the 700r4, i found that a 2400 stall was perfect for get the car to move from a standing start. I choose a lockup torque converter with a lighted switch on the dash to overridei It. With a 3.70 gear out back, it has lots of git up and go. But cruising rpm is 1400 and 1800 with the converter unlocked. My 64 weighs in @3750 lbs empty.

and

yourprices are  close to MB pricing, 8 motor 4 trans if you were to run 400+ hp.

 Sorry for the derail but.... Am I the only one who didn't know Pritch has a 500hp small block in this car????

Im getting a 355 built now will be around 450-475 hp for around $6500.
Am going for a mechanical 700r,dont want more electrical to deal with.
That will be built after my engine for around $3.
