Hello all, got it ready to start today and it turns over but no fire. cleaned points tried again, same thing no fire. should i just swap out the cap and rotor, points and condenser and new wires and see what happens? Also i may have put the rotor on backwards, how do i tell? i know i should have taken a pic before removing, oh well eh?
Try a voltmeter at the coil and see if you have at least 7-8 volts to it with the key on. During cranking it should have pretty well 12 volts to it.
You shouldn't be able to put the rotor on backwards. It should have one square tab on the bottom and one round tab on the bottom so that it is keyed to only go one way on to the distributor.

This is likely the issue, it seems common that the IGN switch has a dead or weak spot right between the crank and run position. May have to run a separate wire.

Yes for some reason the old vehicles with the in-dash ignition switch seem to be prone to that exact problem you describe. I've seen a number of times where the guys say they were able to keep the vehicle running by holding the key in just the right place. I'm betting if a guy could get the ignition switch apart he could clean up the terminals and make it work properly again. I'm not sure how successful an attempt at taking it apart would be.
