Hurricane Danielle formed way out in the Atlantic, it isnt affecting us. Hurricane Earl may bring some weather here, well know later this week. None in August which was very unusual, 2 already in September. Our water is hot, that could mean trouble.

I have a couple new chains, fuel, and bar oil ready for the chainsaw. Did a tuneup on the generator and all set to go. It has been way too hot and too calm so I completely agree with you Don that we might be in a bit of trouble this year.
As far as Earl goes, at this point I'm not concerned. The typical trajectory of a storm in that position will be to take it east of the Atlantic provinces, due to the typical flow of weather systems from west to east. But it is worth watching nonetheless. I won't be surprised if we get a good whack from one this year, for sure.
As a point of interest, the US National Hurricane Center always has really detailed info on tropical storm activity: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Coming up for the Acadia-St.FX football game this weekend. Hope all that stuff stays well offshore. Air travel is enough of a crapshoot these days, without the added risk of weather interruptions.
Earlier this week I was out in Mahone bay and water temperature hit 25.4c/77.7f, it was like bath water. Plenty of heat to cause a hurricane to increase in strength.

Computer modeling, it gets bumped in or out by the movement of the jet stream changing up and down plus by other highs and lows pushing and pulling.

Hurricane Fiona expected to impact Atlantic Canada land areas Saturday and southern offshore areas Friday.
The CHC is monitoring category 3 Hurricane Fiona east of the Bahamas as of Tuesday morning. This storm is expected to travel northward this week and transform into a large and potent post-tropical storm by Saturday. Most computer weather models are predicting this evolution. Currently the range of uncertainty with regard to the centre of the low when it approaches is approximately an 800 kilometre wide zone (cone of uncertainty) centered near eastern Cape Breton. Since we expect the storm to become quite large, the impact area will be very broad. The CHC will begin regular 6-hourly bulletin updates tonight or early Wednesday.
This is kind of interesting. I was at the beach near our home last night and when I looked due east across the water I could see land in an area I've never seen land before. I thought it was some sort of mirage. It turns out it's a strange atmospheric phenomenon which allows the viewing of land quite far away. This is apparently Cape Breton island I was seeing. There's been numerous reports of this sighting all day here in eastern PEI. Cape Breton Island is about 75km due east of me. It apparently is also a harbinger of a bad storm coming. My photo isn't great as it's from my cell phone so I circled the area of land that I typically never see from our beach.
I'm not sure. An old timer Islander told me today that he's heard of folks seeing the Boston skyline from the same area (looking southwest however). This sounds improbable to me with Nova Scotia in the way however I suppose some sort of atmospheric reflection is possible.
So neat! I think you're witnessing what is called a Superior Mirage Todd. In actual fact, the image you see of Cape Breton is actually right above the actual landmass.
We once were hiking along the Bruce trail in Tobermory, and we were greeted with a absolute pristine view of the landmass across Georgian Bay in the direction of Parry Sound. I swear I could see individual trees! About 65 Kilometers away in distance. We were at about 20m above the shore, but we should have only been able to see around 20 kilometers out at that height.

We get this quite often in the Bay where there are many islands off in the distance that sometimes appear much closer than normal. Its usually a sign of a storm coming. I found something called a Fata Morgana, I think this is what is happening, listed as a Superior Morgana.

Great article Don. That's exactly what I saw. It appeared much more clearer and closer in person. I could see a structure that was either a windmill or lighthouse as well.
Latest is well get hurricane force winds, storm surge, 10-12 meter waves, 100-200+mm of rain. Eastern NS, PEI, western Nfld will see the worst. Buckle up.
