2022 Hurricanes Starting

Got back from Charlottetown and wow, there are a lot of power poles down between my place and there! I think I'll be without power for a while yet..

Not much to report today. We are still without power. We spent yesterday running the smaller limbs from the downed cedars through our chipper. I'm glad to have one of those (even if it is over 30 years old, burns oil and is a bit cranky) as it means I won't have to figure out where to put all this brush. At least the weather has been nice to get all this outdoor work completed.

Day 9 without power. It's getting a bit tiring to say the least. Quite a few communites around us have power so fingers crossed we get ours today. We managed to get some laundry done at friends who got power yesterday so that's a plus. I spent yesterday afternoon grinding the smaller branches from our downed maple with my wood chipper. I went through 3 fuel tanks and maybe got half finished. Our friends with power also fed us dinner which was nice.

We got word today they are shooting for end of day Wednesday for our area to get power back. We have power crews from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, BC and Alberta pitching in so there's no shortage of help. There's an area between our place and Charlottetown called Pownal and you'd swear it was a cat 4 hurricane that went through there. Trees and power lines busted like matchsticks. Some of these trees that went over root ball and all have 6 foot diameter trunks.

Still hoping for power by end of day today. Yesterday I changed the oil and spark plug on my "new" generator.

My wife and i just did a quick run to the east coast to return a friend to PEI. we had originally planned a 2 week tour to catch the fall colours of cabot trail plus visit old friends. Fionna nipped that one in the bud. we had planned on leaving saturday but deferred till sunday knowing it wouldn't be till tuesday that we went on the island. i cant believe the damage. Our friend lived on the west coast of PEI so her house wasnt too bad. her internet tower sheared off plus one broken tree. she didn't get power back till wednesday but her house was on a generator and her brother who lived close by kept an eye on it. now the cottages that were on the water just a 1/4 mile away didn't fair so well. think i saw 3 foundations no houses and the local school lost its complete roof. we had to make a trip into charlottetown to pick up her dog. that was another mess. good thing my wifes friend was able to navigate us around. things i saw that stand out were complete corn fields leveled flat, wind break tree lines sheared off. now the good point was we had awesome fall colours on our way back up the east coast of NB and across Que.

Hulleluja! We have electricity again! I was optimistic when I saw 6 Maritime Electric Trucks (some towing trailers with new poles on them) heading down my road this morning. Sure enough we had power at noon.  The feature car is up and I can post a few photos that I took. They really don't convey the sheer amount of damage on the Island. We got away pretty lucky on our property.

Pretty much all the corn fields look like this. Stripped with only a few cobs stll attached

I lost two cedars (luckily the third which has the wire from the road to my house going through it was unscathed). One of my favorite trees, a Mulberry (right) leaned pretty hard but the rootball was still in the ground

With the help of my truck and a tow strap we slowly got the Mulberry standing up again, packed down the area around the roots and staked her on the south side. Hopefully over the next several months the roots will take hold and we can remove the stake.

This tree has leaves that have an almost luminescent glow near sundown in Autumn.

Another favorite tree of mine was this large maple between my property and the west field. By the way it was twisted it had seen and survived it's share of storms in the past. Not Fiona. cry

One of the larger branches we cut so far had 80 rings so I suspect this gal was over a century old. Check out the size of the root ball. Dozens of century old trees fell during Fiona in PEI

Here's a photo I took in August 2020 with an arrow pointing to the maple:

The woods behind my property took a beating.

Our road was covered with trees. A couple of guys in a 1/2 ton truck came down the road the next morning after the storm with chainsaws and made enough room for one lane. Notice the shredded leaves on the road. The north side of our house was covered in them.

This photo really doesn't convey the damage to this woods. In person it looked like a giant foot had stomped on the trees

On a bright note the two bee hives we owned survived thanks to placing cinder blocks on them before the storm. We celebrated by extracting about 30lbs of honey this past weekend.

Nice honey, name it Fiona honey? Congratulations on power and the damage is awful.

LOL, we should label the jars "Fiona Honey". Likely most of the flowers the bees got the pollen from have been wiped out.

An amateur meteorologist in my area had a weather station set up during the storm and his last wind reading before it was destroyed was 248kph! It's assumed there may have been some tornadoes in this storm. That would explain the extreme damage in one spot while an area a few yards away is fine.  This is a perfect example. I pulled over today and took this photo in Vernon Bridge which is about half way between my place and Charlottetown. Unreal the tree damage.A few yard down the road there isn't much damage at all.
