Has anyone done their own water pump rebuild?

Anyone here bought one of the kits and rebuilt their own water pump so that they can keep their original correct casting number and date?

we have John Stuart power brake here in Stoney Creek ON. At one time you could drop your pump off and they would rebuild it on site

Years ago I rebuilt Perkins water pumps because the rebuild kit was 1/4 of the cost of a reman pump. Never had any problems with them.

There must be a service in Winnipeg that'll do this carl.

Or maybe crack the black art yourself?

Carl...It's a "no brainer". I did it years ago... Just buy a quality parts kit. I don't even think I needed a press. Just used a vise and socket to press the shaft out... I think I bought one of the "HIPO" kits that you riveted a plate on the impeller to improve the circulation. I ran it on my LT1 Vette, worked great..

No problem getting one rebuilt in Winnipeg at Autoline but Beaumontguru and I were in an auto wrecking and we were discussing the possibility of finding a core with a correct casting date, then rebuilding the pump ourself.

Dad and I used to rebuild them years ago! Didn't even think you could still buy the kits? Used to also rebuild the starters and alts back in the day. He had a vibrator for the armatures and the alt kits came with rectifier bridge, diode trio, bearings etc. Miss those days in the shop with him. Would clean up the commutator on the lath and file in between with a hacksaw blade afterwards.. Seems we never bought new stuff...just fixed the old..... Thanks for the remind of the memories Carl!

Yes, I recall guys using the "growler" on the armatures too. I started in parts at the GM dealership in 1980. In those days about the only things we didn't rebuild were the fuel pumps and water pumps, although we could still buy kits for those old fuel pumps that were screwed together.

That's what it was!!! Growler!  That's how long it's been....... The vibrator's were used in the old 50's radios!!

That's interesting as I have a late '65 BBC SWP (3856284 J65) that I would like to rebuild. I'll never use it but I'd like to clean it up before I sell it.

A member indicated the kits are readily available, but when I dug around after his comment I could only find 1 kit on eBay.   Not sure if there's different kits for long & short BBC water pumps.

the only guy I have heard of selling parts kits at a reasonable price was based out of Florida iirc...

I'm all ears because I have a date correct WP for my car.

EDIT: I would be looking for parts to rebuild Pontiac V8 (1969-1979; 350, 400, 428, 455)
