L72 exhaust manifolds

My apologies to Kevin for totally derailing his disc brake thread and turning it into a discussion on big block exhaust manifolds. I'll move that part of the discussion in that thread to this thread.

No, the big block Chevelles didn't have a special manifold for the solid lifter big blocks, crazy as it seems. Only the B bodies used a special manifold for the solid lifters and on top of that, only on the 65 B body L78 and the 66 B body L72.

Kevin.. I may have a left side BB manifold for sale this winter. I think I'm going to install my headers

Bruce, you do know that B body and A body manifolds don't interchange?

No, I didn't know that. But thinking of it, the one I'm thinking of selling I think is a Corvette casting #. It is straight at the bottom, the 66 425HP has a curve at the bottom (I have a set of the correct ex mans)  That makes sense them being different....

Here is what the l72 66 Canadian Pontiac and any 66 Chevrolet L72 B body would have used.

Those are the hard to get exhaust manifolds, 827/828 without emissions holes. I have the same set" with" the holes. The one above on the right is for the drivers side, I have one but it goes straight at the bottom. I believe it was used on the Corvettes.

The Corvette manifolds and the 66 B body L72 manifolds are identical.

Dorman reproduces these manifolds. They come with the holes for smog pumps so you have to plug them.

I had bought a set for my Strato Chief 427 conversion but then I found originals so the Dormans went back. But I had no complaints about the Dorman pieces, they looked great and it seems to me the price wasn't all that bad on them.

Do they have a ceramic coat that looks like cast iron?

The left side is different for the Vette...3994045

I'm not sure where you found that but 3994045 is not a Corvette manifold that I can find. All my books say the 66 L72 B body left manifold is the same as big block Corvettes.

I show 3994045 as fitting Impala/Caprice and pickup trucks.

I bought them from a Corvette guy, so I jumped to that conclusion that he said they were off a 74-75. I never checked the # to GM parts, but it seems they will fit some Chevelles and for sure the B body 65-65 cars. There is no "turn down" on the bottom, makes it a little difficult to install the oil filter.

If someone needs one or the pair, I have them.

I am itching so bad to see that L72 Grande Parisienne project. The only thing better would be to find one of the originals!
