ok, I have used up my good units and now what i have left will need parts to rebuild them. Should I just buy a new unit or is the GM one better?

Auburn for the Positraction unit, U.S. Gear for the Ring & Pinion if you can't find a GM part. That is what I have heard.
The Auburn is rebuild-able, while others like the True Trac are not.

If you decide to go this way check your lug nuts often! It will shake them loose!

I have a Eaton Posi in my 67. Still puts down two perfectly even stripes, and never chatters in turns. Carbon clutches.

Always rebuildable if needed.

Eaton. GM, Yukon?

As far as I know, the internals are all common to the 8.875" Passenger car posi.

Eaton adds some different carbon clutch discs and perhaps a different rate in the preload spring pack, but I believe it's all the same design.

 

Eaton Service Kit contents,

199554-010 is the 8.875" passenger car 3 series,

I know the parts books list different pieces for the real early 12 bolts. It seems to me that the 66 and up 12 bolts are all the same though. I'm talking car diffs, no idea about the truck 12 bolts.

this is an original 3 series GM that blew up. slit the spider gears and tore up the spring pack. The carier its self looks good. its where its better to replace the parts or buy a new complete unit

Described as 8.2/8.5" but the 8.875 is the same disc.

Gear service kit  29412-00S  $473

Preload kit 400# 29590-00S  $101

Choose 200, 400 or 800# pressure

Eaton posi unit, 8.875, 3 series 19554-010  $948 Cdn

 

 

Last time I bought one it was $598 Cdn! But I'd still be inclined to buy a new unit Kevin,

digging through the garage i found a total of 2 - 2 series and 3 - 3 series carrier posi. none of them would be worthy of just sticking in the way they are so a new one is on the way. I also have a few B body complete rears with posi in them but i will leave them together.

Ack! I said Auburn when I meant Eaton. Auburns are not rebuildable, the Eaton units are.

Sorry for the wrong info. Time to do some dusting, inside my head.
