1966 Pontiac bench seat headrests

I have never seen an original 66 Pontiac bench seat headrest setup. This wagon I brought home yesterday has headrests. I don't know if they are original but I do know there was a headrest option available. Does anyone have any details on originals? Pics, data etc?

I had a 66 wagon that had headrests. I looked to see if they were a factory option and could not find anything. Yours has 2 posts, this one has 1, guessing they are aftermarket. Interesting on this one, it has the split middle seat.

 Interesting.

I also sent pics to my friend who has done 66 Caprices for about 40 years. He said when he restored his wagon a few years ago he wanted to put headrests in but couldn't find any. He looked at the pictures I sent him and said "those are original".

So you are saying you think the ones in your wagon are aftermarket, or mine are aftermarket?

I'm going to have to see if I can find anything in any books I have.

I'm going to take a razor blade and slit the upholstery open. I'll be able to see pretty quick if they are OEM or aftermarket I'm betting.

And apparently that split seat is pretty rare.

Tonight the curiosity got me, I cut the seat back open with a razor blade (the seat is shot anyway)

No doubt at all, these are factory headrests, option A82 on a bench seat. I don't think I've ever seen another one. The parts book says they are identical to the same option on a 66 full size Chev. I'll be curious to see if anyone has ever seen these before. This has got to be one of the rarest options I've ever seen on a 66.

No, I checked there right away! Only thing on it is A33, power back window.

The more I dig in the books, the more these headrests don't make sense. They are supposed to be a flat single post according to everything I find but yet they look totally factory installed and even more so when I cut the seat open and looked inside. If you look, there is a hole in the seat frame for each post. If there was a single centre post, it wouldn't fit because there is no hole in the seat frame for a middle flat post like I find pictures of (Caprice wagons).

Had 66 Cadillac with headrests like in the pictures of 63gpman. The head rests in Carls looks like 67 Plymouth A-body1967_Valiant_Headrests-reduced.jpg70backframeF.jpg70headrestassyF (1).jpg

Was this a late build? May be a late year change and the 2 posts appears on the 67 models?

They sure do look like the 67 Plymouth don't they? The one thing different I see is the bezel that's on top of the seat upholstery is different on mine vs the Plymouth.

More investigating to do....I'd love to find the option sheet in this car.

Neither one! I couldn't bring myself to cut into the original interior in the post car (yes, I cut the floor for the 4 speed....) and the yellow car has buckets with factory headrests on the build sheet.

Dec 16 so it's even more on the early side, maybe 3-4 months into production, so too early for 67 stuff.

I notice screw holes on the side in the first pic, a retainer for shoulder belt ? Maybe it's a newer seat with the older upholstery on it.

Good clue, I'll take a look at that. The track looked original at first glance but maybe I'll have to take it out and flip it over to be sure.

No... The Poncho with the headrests. Could you not run the VIN with Vintages and see the option sheet?

The holes on the trim tag on the Body # line denote a running change to add shoulder belt anchors during the 1966 model run.

Sightings of those headrests on that '66 are as rare as:

rawImage.jpg

They were available on all series & seats though.
