Cigarette lighter and rear console light are always on

Hey there, I just replaced all dash and console light bulbs with LED (which surprisingly turned out to be dimmable) and noticed some issues - the very rear console light and cigaret lighter are now always on. Before the lighter was only on when the door was open or ignition is on, the rear console light - not sure, maybe it was on when all lights were on, maybe the same thing with an open door, hard to say because it was half burnt and was quite dim. Grounding issues somewhere under the console cover? I looked pretty unstable.

When you say cigarette lighter is on, do you mean the light on the lighter socket, or that the lighter socket is now always energized (on)?

hmm, lets get some comments from guys with 65's, but I would have thought the cigarette lighter socket is always on (allowing you to light up a smoke while at the drive-in with the car off). That's the way it is on my 70's.

It doesn't make any sense saying your cigarette lighter socket was only on when a door was open or ignition was on. I've never heard of it having anything to do with the door opening.

It does make sense that the rear console light would come on when the door was open, as it should operate like a dome light. However, it should turn off with the door closed.

As far as I know the cigar socket should be live all the time. The console light and all other interior lights should come on when a door opens or when the light switch knob is turned counterclockwise past the cam bump.

All 65's I have had were this way.

Weird, my dash cam turns on every time I open the door or start the car. Until today, when is started to work all the time along with the only working courtesy light in the console on the rear.

It's not a big issue with the cigaret lighter, but the lights id rather have operational. I got the car with no side courtesy light bulbs on the sail panels and all wiring including courtesy lights and ignition lights removed from their holes under the dash and no light bulbs on them. The console rear light seemed to be working, at least I saw it working when I disassembled and assembled the console during carpet installation, however the light bulb there was partially damaged, one of contacts was not fully attached, I just replaced it with this

I'm not really sure what all this means.  Please break down what you're talking about into different categories.

Dome light, light on rear of console, and by the sound of it the courtesy lights on the sail panels should all come on when a door is opened, or if you turn the headlight knob all the way to the counter clockwise.

Not sure what you're talking about "ignition lights removed from their holes under the dash and no light bulbs on them".  Sounds like you're talking about the dash lights (grey wire), whose brightness are also run by the headlight knob.

Maybe your headlight switch has gone haywire.

By ignition light I mean the light bulb that is called "ignition light" on diagram, brown wire, by courtesy lights the lights that are called "courtesy lamp" on diagram, black/orange and white wires, two lamps by the doors under the dash and two lamps in sail panels, the ones in between rear window and rear side windows, white and orange wires.

By the holes I mean the round holes where you put lightbulb along with the sticker. Headlight switch is a couple month old, doesn't seem like there's any issues with it.

OMG, it was the switch position! Before i thought all the way left is 100% brightness and if you switch to the right it's dimmable area after click, i assume because the console light was not working most of time. Now i need to figure out why the rear courtesy lights are not working, will check door jambs

Do your under dash courtesy lights come on when you open the door? If so, then it must be the wires to the rear because they all operate off that same switch in the door jamb.

i managed to make one under dash courtesy lights work (the driver door one) but the rest don't seem to work. However the rear console light is not coming on when the door is open, it only can be turned on by the switch in all the way to the left position.

So there are 4 of these slots, two male and two female, by trying different combination I managed to get either left courtesy light, either right courtesy light, either console light work from door jamb. Never all of them or at least two.

65 wiring diagram. It's small but maybe you can chase the wire locations.

Typically the wiring diagrams are for base models, and things courtesy lights may not appear.  Same with your sail panel lights.   But as I take a closer look at the diagram posted by 1965CS, I see they're present.

Typically the dome light works as there's always power there, and the door switches (and turning the headlight know counter clockwise) provides the ground for the lamp(s) to light.

Victory (well, 95% of victory)!!! I found a loose black/brown stripe connector around the radio and connected it with that black/brown bundle and now all the necessary lights (all courtesy and rear console) come up on driver door opening. However it doesn't seem the passenger door is doing the same:( On the up side there's still one more loose black/brown stripe wire connector.

It looks like those spider type connections that a say in my previous Parisienne were removed and replaced with bunch of connectors combinations luckily with correct wiring colors.

Your passenger door switch might need cleaning.

A likely issue, since they operate by grounding the wire.

It seems it was working for the passenger lamp when i haven't connected it in more or less correct sequence though, will check.
Cigarette lighter seems got fixed by itself:) Turns on when door is closed after opening. Dimming dash diods however no longer dimming somehow even with the new switch. Maybe after i added more different diod lights into courtesy lights

RE: Cigarette lighter and rear console light are always on

Thanks everyone,
@seventy2plus2 and @1965CS, you were right about cleaning passenger door jamb switch, now both doors enable the light. Everything works perfectly except diods not dimming anymore, thanks again!

Did you test the rheostat on the new light switch? Sounds like it's toast.
FYI - they're Light Emitting Diodes (LED's). You really threw me for a loop when you said diods. Electronically diodes are somewhat different.

I got brand new switch and even with that new switch they are not dimming, I will try with regular lamps as a courtesy lights again, maybe it has to do something with those.
