RE: Started my manual trans conversion 66 Grande Parisienne

Looking good Carl, you will have to come help me with mine since you've done it afew times now I think??? That biscayne we picked up still has the manual trans stuff there if you need any measurements etc. Can't help with the floor hump though, i don't even have any good measurements for placement. Yet.

Oh yeah, never even thought of that one. I may come for a drive one day with a camera, tape measure and note pad.

Actually, '65-'70 are the same... That was the great thing with our Canadian Pontiac's and Chevys!

Would someone who owns a factory manual trans 65-66 B body be willing to look at the z bar and tell me if it sits flat (horizontal) and also if it runs pretty much perpendicular to the block or at an angle? I'd like to make sure I get the tab welded on the frame in the correct spot.

Thanks in advance.

........2morrow I can take a pic of the 67 I just brought home the other day. Motor is out but I recall seeing the shaft was still bolted on to the bracket .  66 and 67 are same thing.

I was hoping you'd see this and could help! Thanks in advance. Can you also get me some hump pics from different angles and measurements to some good reference point (seat belt bolt holes would be good) so that I can figure it out?

You have exactly the car I need for the details to put mine together. I appreciate your assistance.

My fifth picture down from the top has my rusty old remnants of a factory 4 speed hump sitting roughly where I think it may belong. Anyway, I will either buy a repro or repair this one and yes, I have a factory 4 speed bench seat boot I will be using.

Come down before it snows, we got 3" + off snow here now actually.

Hmm, maybe Sunday or Monday? It's supposed to be sunny now and that will melt pretty quick.

I may not have to though. If I get some shots from Nailhead showing the hump, I may well have enough to start. I was thinking of taking the car to the shop for the day on Monday. I should be able to knock off most of the conversion on Monday if I have all my ducks in a row.

Andrew, do you have a factory 4 speed hump that I can look at?

Excellent, I would like to do that if I can. Maybe sometime tomorrow or Monday? We'll see how this weekend pans out. Either that or a CP coffee night one of these days...

Michael, could I bug you for one more measurement?

Could you take the measurement I show in this picture, back of the hump opening to the centre of the seat belt bolt as in the picture here? I don't have to have the picture of it, just the measurement.

Thanks.

No, the members are different... When I put the 4 gear in my Rag back in '85 sometime, I had to heat and flatten the member in that same area.... Same with my my '70 Parisienne sedan and my coupe... So, you have one of 2 choices!

I have never seen a manual member in the "flesh"....

Just checked the book, group 4.081, member.... Nothing listed for manual 4-speeds... Just TH with and without -67...

nope, there is a 'manual member'

another... x member is flatter in the center

'68-'72 chevelle/monte 4 spd x members are the same

this 4205 b body hurst mount will space the shifter higher to clear the auto x member

I brought my car to the dealership and I'm doing a Z bar test fit right now. I am sure I have it right but think I should confirm---does the Z bar hit the ball on the block at quite an angle? I was thinking it would go at the block perpendicular but it's nowhere near it. I'm pretty sure I have it right because it goes right across the dimple in the frame you guys mentioned and it all makes sense, just clears the rag joint on the steering box by maybe 3/8" or so.

And with that, even though we're closed I just heard the coffee bell so time to hit the lunchroom for a piece of toast!

Whoops, never mind. I just realized I have the engine side pivot ball in the block, not the bellhousing! (Still thinking Acadian stuff here, where the ball threads in to the block!)

Next snag!

Does anyone have a crossmember that they know to be out of a 4 speed car? I don't have a way to post a pic right now, but when I went to lower the transmission back down, the rubber mount stopped about an inch short of the crossmember... Low and behold the arm/lever that is part of the shifter body (not the rod running forward to the trans) for 3rd and 4th hits the crossmember. I had no idea there is a different crossmember for a 4 speed but obviously there must be.

What I need to see is pictures of the crossmember showing from about centre to about 8" to the left of centre, the shifter side.

You used a stock shifter like this one too?

It was a hurst.... I used and still have the breaker bar I used as a drift to flatten the crossmember after I heated it! Dad wasn't happy! But, it did the job and still works.... smile
