I have an old Canadian Tire, cordless electric drill - 12 V NiCd. I haven't used it a lot but the charger packed it in. Some resistors on the printed circuit board overheated and fried - I replaced them but the printed circuit board is too far gone and they just fried again. There must be some other component on the board that is defective and allows too much voltage to the resistor.

Anyway, after I replaced the resistors (before they fried again), I did manage to get a charge on the batteries and they seem to be OK. The drill itself is fine.

I've googled and checked with Canadian Tire but I cannot find a replacement for the charger. Batteries, yes, but no charger.

Any idea where to look? Seems a shame to throw it away. I might try "farmering" a charger using a car battery charger (they're both 12 V - right?) Yes, I'd do it away from anything that might burn! Before I try that though, I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone has a better suggestion - and derail the derailing thread...

might want to check your local kijiji.....saw two CTC 12v NiCad drill sets with chargers in T.O. one for $25 and one for $30.

Greaser - Thanks much!! I think I can rig up new internals for my old charger from the circuit diagram in your link. The old charger is fine - except for the resistors and printed circuit board. Based on the circuit diagram, I should be able to just solder the components together and attached them to what's left of the PCB.

I also see a procedure for converting it to Lithium Ion batteries.... That might be a good way to go too, except I think the Li-ion batteries are about the same price as a new drill!

I suspect the resistors I picked up previously were rated at too low a current. Might have to get heavier ones or maybe run a bunch in parallel.   Thinking about it though, I need to check the transformer in the charger - that's possibly the culprit. Either way, after seeing how simple the circuit is, I think I can figure it out.  Sure beats tossing the whole thing in the dumpster!
